Morris S. Crandall

Morris S. Crandall, 85, of 4055 Morris Road, Sherman, died at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Absolut of Westfield, N.Y.

He was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Sherman, N.Y., the son of the late Clifford L. and Inez V. Webber Crandall.

Morris was a dairy farmer and a rural mail carrier in Sherman, Ripley, and in East Aurora, N.Y.

He was a 1941 graduate of Chautauqua High School, and attended Cornell University.

He joined the North Harmony United Methodist Church in 1951 and was a member of Mayville Senior Citizens.

Morris was a member of the national, state, and county Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a life member of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post 8647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the William Travis American Legion Post 493, both in Mayville, NY.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and was a PFC rifleman, having served in the European Theater. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for being wounded Dec. 12, 1944, after being shot by a German sniper in the Battle of Huert-gen Forest, and also received the Bronze Battle Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and E.A.M.E.T. Ribbon.

Crandall enjoyed gardening fixing cars, and bird watching.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Crandall, of Sherman, N.Y., whom he married Sept.6, 1947. His children: Ronald (wife, Sally) Crandall, of State College, Pa., Barbara (husband, Michael) Smith, of Batavia, N.Y., and Norman, (wife, Kathaleen) Crandall, of Stoneham, Mass.; six grandchildren: David Crandall of Ithaca, N.Y., Susan Crandall, of Brooklyn, N.Y., James Smith of Stillwater, N.Y., Emily Smith of Denver, Colo., Joseph and Katelyn Crandall, of Stoneham, Mass.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Albert Crandall, June 23, 1978; an infant granddaughter, Amanda Crandall October 1992; a grandson, Daniel Smith, Dec. 6, 2003; and three brothers: Everett E. Crandall, 1993, Vincent R. Crandall, 2001 and Albert J. Crandall, 1949.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, N.Y., with Pastor John Bowen, officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the North Harmony United Methodist Church , Sherman Stedman Road, Sherman, NY, 14781 or the Stanley Hose Company Fire Department, P.O. Box 574, Sherman, NY, 14781.
