Consumer Protection Act Just A Glorified Tax
To the Readers' Forum:
I have just finished reading the wonderful talking point news release from Rep. Brian Higgins, D, announcing the just-passed-midnight, make-us-look-good, do-nothing piece of legisation called the ''Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act.''
Boy, I'm impressed. The only thing I can see in the release are the talking points Tax, Tax, Tax. Call it what you may, it's still a tax. Corporations don't pay taxes, those costs are passed to the consumer. For some of the Cool-aiders, that's us. It gives $$$$$ to alternative energy, wind, corn, tides ect. Don't see anything for nuclear.
The back page of the bill prohibits almost all off shore drilling where the it is most accessible. Considering over 60 percent of Americans want more drilling where the oil and natural gas is. What a shame.
Oh well, at least we got $3 million for a train station with no trains to be used as a bus stop for buses that need government $$ to survive. How sad.

Danyay, unfortunately many of our railroad lines are in a sorry state of disrepair. Many lines have been abandoned as more and more goods are transported by truck. Railroads are a cheaper way of transporting masses of cargo such as coal and as fuel prices rise hopefully people will see that it is a safer, more comfortable, and often cheaper way to travel long distances than by car. It could greatly reduce the wear and tear on our highways caused by big trucks.

JulieB, you must have learned the art of exaggeration from your ideological brother, Danyay. My dislike, not hatred, of Bush began with the stolen presidential election and grew as his incompetence became more and more obvious. I don't much like the current congress which can't seem to get anything done because there is almost an equal number of both parties. Bush's 12% approval is negligibly better than that of congress. Now if you have anything informative to say, go for it, otherwise take your own advice and give it a rest and be more informed.

There are oil rigs off the west coast, especially California. And as for nuclear around here, it's probably because it wouldn't make sense. Not only do we have abundant amounts of ultra-cheap hydropower from the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls, but we also have an enormous supply of coal from Pennsylvania and West Virginia, as well as the rail lines to transport it this way.

Question regarding off-shore drilling: Why are most drilling platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico and off the shores of southeast US where most seastorms hit and cause the worst damage which results in shoreline damage from oil? What's wrong with the west coast of the US? Regarding the lack of mention of nuclear in "Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act", I assume it's because this area is totally against having anything nuclear around here.

Costs are almost always passed to the consumer (the taxpayer). That's how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Privatizing profits and socializing losses ... that's the Bush way of doing things. And, Bush is a poo-poo ... who's stopping Congress from accomplishing things? Of course, it would help if Congress tried coming up with things more pertinent to the issues at hand! Bottom line: Our current government (beginning with the Reagan era) is poo-poo ...... Bush is merely the current leader of the poo-poo pack. The letter's point regarding the train station/bus stop ...... it is sad ... but it did make me chuckle ... and, I don't chuckle! The "facade" work being done in downtown Jamestown ... what good is it if there's nothing significant inside the buildings? Personally, I cannot afford to eat out, nor do I drink, so the facelifts are of absolutely no use to me ... spend the dollars more wisely, please!

Monkeyboy, so does your beloved speaker - incidentally, the worst speaker in the history of the United States House of Representatives, and quite possibly the worst elected leader in any form of representative democracy, ever.

Monkeyboy, I have noted on almost every occasion where you submit a comment, that it really has nothing to do with the subject. And your comments really only spew your hatred of Pres. Bush. Do you also have hatred for Congress which currently holds a 7% approval rating? They have accomplished exactly nothing in the last 4 years. Pres. Bush has done a poor job, but you can't seriously blame EVERY bad situation on him. Give it a rest, and be more informed.

Then Bush must be the drunkest sailor in history. He wants to give $700 billion to greedy bankers.

And if you ride your bike to work, the company you work for must pay you $20.00 a month extra. Believe that little requirement is on page 260 something of the bill. We sure have elected a duozzy of a Congress person; who thinks that taking our money and spending like a drunken sailor is just the ticket to buy him votes (please forgive the bad connotation you sailors out there).
