Harold Lyle Blood

Harold Lyle Blood, 81, of 52 Hammond St., passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning Sept. 21, 2008, in his home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1926, in the Town of Poland, a son of the late Vernon and Florence Stone Blood.

He was a World War II veteran, honorably discharged Fireman First Class of The U. S. Navy on July 17, 1946. He served aboard the USS Las Vegas Victory and the USS Yancey, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theatre Medal and The Victory Metal.

Prior to his retirement in 1988, he was employed by Nelson Brothers Lumber as a woodworker. A master carpenter all of his life, he built many things for his family that will be cherished throughout the generations.

In his earlier years, he was an avid hunter. He also built a buggy and had a team of horses that he showed in parades. He will be remembered by family and friends as always having a good joke to tell.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years the former Shirley Rasmussen, whom he married June 30, 1951; three children: Kathy (James) Swearingen of Midway, Ky., a son, Shaun (Sharon) Blood of Busti and a daughter, Ginny Tapp of Dunkirk; eight grandchildren: Christopher (Cardee) Swearingen of Busti, Leslie (Andrew) Walters of Celoron, Benjamin and Zachary Blood of Lakewood, Nicole Clendenen of Bemus Point, Cierra Haskins of Clymer and Tristin and Cheyanne Tapp who reside with Harold and Shirley; two great-grandchildren: Harlee and Kamden Swearingen of Busti; five sisters: Louise Cheney of California, Betty Reynolds of Frewsburg and Alice Bernhardt, Connie Johnson and Florence Minton, all of Jamestown; and several nieces and nephews. Harold was told this past week that a new great-grandchild is on its way. He will also be sadly missed by dear friends Ron and Barb Waldron; and his Jack Russell, Shorty.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Blood who passed away October 29, 1957,; a brother ,Vernon Blood; and two sisters: Bertha Rasmussen and Eunice Valone.

A private service will be held at the Lind Funeral Home at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
