Jammers Bats Come Alive In Critical Win
By Jim Riggs jriggs@post-journal.comAfter suffering 1-0 and 2-1 losses in their previous two games at Williamsport, the Jamestown Jammers came out swinging the bats at Diethrick Park on Wednesday night.
The first four Jammers who came to the plate picked up hits and the third was a three-run home run. Jamestown went on to send nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the opening inning and that propelled them to a 7-2 win over the Batavia Muckdogs.
When asked if he expected his team's bats to come alive, Jamestown manager Darin Everson said, ''We were hoping, because it was one of those things where we had opportunities in the last couple games and fell behind and now it's just a matter of keeping our offense rolling.''
He added, ''The thing that we've had is we've had great pitching for the last four or five games and hopefully we'll keep that rolling.''
That was true Wednesday night as starting pitcher Elih Villaneuva went six innings and allowed six hits and one walk while striking out four to pick up the win. Then reliever Kedrick Martin pitched one shutout inning with one hit, Wayman Gooch worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on two hits and Jared Yecker finished up and went 1 shutout innings with one hit.
It was a must win for the Jammers, but still might be too little too late. With the victory, Jamestown now trails Batavia by 1 games in the Pinckney Division. The teams play tonight in Batavia and if the Muckdogs win, they claim the title.
If Jamestown wins, it is still alive, but Batavia has a big edge. The Muckdogs had a game each with Mahoning Valley and Oneonta rained out and the NY-P League has announced that those games will not be made up. The Muckdogs have three games left while the Jammers have four, so if the teams end up tied, the Muckdogs would still win the title on percentage points.
The Jammers still remain a half-game behind Brooklyn for the wild-card spot because the Cyclones defeated Hudson Valley, 9-6.

The Jammers, who had lost three in a row and five of their last six, showed their bats had come alive in the first frame. Paul Gran and Kevin Mattison had back-to-back singles and then Miguel Fermin hit his league-leading 16th home run to left field.
Ben Lasater followed with another single and after Ernie Banks struck out, Jeremy Synan singled to right field. The ball got past the right fielder which allowed Lasater and Synan to move up a base and when Synan rounded second too far, the Muckdogs tried to throw him out. The first baseman's throw went into left field and Lasater scored while Synan went to third. He scored from there with two outs on a single by Brandon Turner for a 5-0 lead.
''It's always big to start off in a big game like this, it's a basically a playoff game,'' Everson said. ''All of our games the rest of the way are playoff games.''
Batavia got a run back in the third when Edwin Gomez led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Shane Peterson.
However, the Jammers put two more runs up in the bottom of the inning when lead-off batter Banks reached base on an error, Joel Staples singled with one out and Turner followed with a two-run double to move the Jamestown lead to 7-1.
''That was a big one,'' Everson said about his team answering back with two runs after Batavia scored one. ''To answer what they did to shorten the lead a little bit was very big. And our pitchers going out after we scored and put the zero up.''
The 7-1 lead lasted until the top of the eighth when Batavia added another run against Gooch.
Peterson singled with one out and eventually scored on a two-out bloop single by Frederick Parejo.
After tonight's game at Batavia, the Jammers finish the season at home. They have a doubleheader against Williamsport on Friday at 5:05 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
