Jammers Lose Ground In Race

POSTED: September 3, 2008

WILLIAMSPORT-The Jamestown Jammers are doing everything in their power to not make the playoffs this season, dropping their second-straight contest against Williamsport, 2-1, in the New York Penn League.

What also hurts is that every other team in the playoff hunt has been winning lately.

Batavia won Tuesday, pushing the Jammers 2 games out in the Pinckney Division and game out in the wild card with only four games left in the regular season for Jamestown.

The Brooklyn Cyclones, after winning nine in a row, finally took a loss as well to keep their slim game lead over the Jammers for the wild card spot.

Tuesday's loss was a tough one, as the Jammers pitching staff didn't allow an earned run all night while the offense left seven on base and grounded into two double plays.

Three singles after a throwing error in the third inning plated two runs for the opportunistic Crosscutters, who are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention but playing the role of spoiler quite well.

Freddy Ballestas pitched five innings for Williamsport and gave up just one run-an Ernie Banks RBI single - following a Ben Lasater double in the fourth inning.

In the third inning, Kevin Mattison tripled to give Jamestown a chance to score a run, but it came with two outs. Paul Gran lined out to end the inning and the scoring threat.

Daniel Jennings pitched well on the mound for the Jammers, going five innings and striking out six.

Chris Bodisbaugh came on in relief of Jennings and struck out four in the final three innings, but the story of the game was the tough error in the third that opened the door for the Crosscutters.

Two were out in the inning with Joe Blackburn on third base, who reached on a throwing error by Gran, the third baseman.

D'Arby Myers, Steve Susdorf and Cody Overbeck hit back-to-back-to-back singles, plating two unearned runs and denying the Jammers control of the wild card lead.

A key two-game series might decide their respective seasons, as Batavia travels to Jamestown today at 7:05 p.m., one night before hosting the Jammers in the second game of their series on Thursday.

With one week of the season left, only the Lowell Spinners have clinched their division title, ironically enough with the worst record of any team vying for the final three playoff spots at 39-31.
