Milk Prices Increase In July
Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during July increased from a month earlier, according to Steve Ropel, U.S. Agriculture Department National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Office director.
The price of corn, hay and oats also increased. The price of wheat and eggs decreased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information.
Dairy farmers in New York received an average of $20 per hundredweight of milk sold during July, a $1.10 increase from June but $2.10 less than July 2007. Poultry producers received an average of 64.7 cents per dozen eggs sold, a 31.1 cent decrease from June and 24.3 cents less than last year.
Grain corn, at $7.13 per bushel, increased 75 cents from June and increased $3.76 from 2007. Hay averaged $168.00 a ton, a $39 increase from June and $45 more than July 2007. Wheat averaged $5.66 per bushel, a $2.83 decrease from June but 4 cents more than 2007. Oats, at $3.90 per bushel, increased $1.05 from June and increased $1.81 from 2007.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in July, at 161 percent, based on 1990-92=100, increased 3 points, or 1.9 percent, from June. The Crop Index increased 3 points, or 1.6 percent, and the Livestock Index increased 1 point, or .7 percent. Producers received higher prices for cattle, soybeans, broilers and sweet corn, and lower prices for eggs, wheat, tomatoes and cucumbers. In addition to prices, the overall index is affected by the seasonal change based on a three-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly marketings of wheat, grapes, hay and tomatoes, offset decreased marketings of milk, cantaloupes, potatoes and apples.
