FREDONIA - The New Horizons Band of Western New York will present a free summer concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Barker Common Gazebo in Fredonia.

Those attending should bring lawn chairs for greater comfort.

The program will be selected from ''Model 'T''' by Sammy Nestico, ''Fiero'' by Steve Hodges, ''Georgia On My Mind'' arranged by Eric Osterling, ''To Reap the Blessings of Freedom'' arranged by Douglas Wagner, ''Three Ayres from Gloucester'' by Hugh Stuart, ''Along Came the Cowboys'' by Stephen Bulla, ''The Syncopated Clock'' by Leroy Anderson, arranged by Philip Lang, and ''Brighton Beach March'' by William Latham.

Betty Bullock McKinney, special guest conductor, will direct the band. Ms. McKinney is the former director of the Gem City Concert and Jazz Bands, Erie, Pa. She was the second clarinetist of the Erie Chamber Orchestra from 1995 to 2006, private clarinet and saxophone instructor/clinician from 1972 to 2007. She was a member of the music education faculty at Mercyhurst College from 2002 to 2007. She is the business manager of the Erie Jr. Philharmonic, Erie Youth Orchestra and Young Artists' Debut orchestras and is a member of the New Horizons Band of Western New York.

The band, under the direction of Dr. Katherine Levy, was launched by the State University at Fredonia School of Music in 2007. New Horizons Band members, who are at least 50 years old and are from throughout the region, are given the opportunity to learn to play a band instrument, return to playing a band instrument after a long absence, or continue to improve playing an instrument they have long enjoyed. The average age of the New Horizons Band of Western New York is nearly 64 years ranging in age from the early 50s to the late 70s.

The fall term will begin in early September. Participants must provide their own instruments in good repair. No audition is required for membership. No previous background in music or on a instrument is necessary to join. During the fall term, group lessons and band rehearsals will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. The program includes two weekly group lessons on an instrument and two weekly band rehearsals in Mason Hall on the Fredonia campus. During the first hour, Fredonia students provide sectional instruction. The entire band rehearses during the second hour under the direction of Dr. Katherine Levy.
