Edward V. “Ted” DeVine

Edward V. "Ted" DeVine, 76, of 102 School Ave., WE, died at 8:01 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2008, in his home.

He was born February 17, 1932, in Sharon, Pa., the son of the late Vincent and Mary Reardon DeVine, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

A history teacher, Ted earned a bachelor's degree from Westminster College and his master's degree from St. Bonaventure University. He taught for 35 years in Jamestown, retiring from the former Lincoln Junior High School in 1988. He also owned and operated the local Putt-Putt courses at Chautauqua and Lakewood for 25 years and was known to many as "Mr. Putt-Putt."

He was a lifetime member of the NEA and also belonged to the Chautauqua County Teachers Association, AARP, the Vikings, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and the Herman Kent Post American Legion in Celoron.

Ted will always be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He never forgot a student he had in class and could years later call them by name. Ted was also a life-time fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns.

Surviving are his wife, Sally Swanson DeVine, whom he married December 31, 1957; two sons: Bradley DeVine of Olmsted Falls, Ohio and Brian (Danielle) DeVine of Ashville; a grandson, Patrick DeVine and granddaughter, Kerry DeVine, both of Olmsted Falls; and a sister, Rosemary Waugaman of Crozet, Va.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Mary Krahn, Hospice chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Friends will be received for two hours prior to the service in the funeral home Thursday.
