Cassadaga Legion Post Plans Ceremonies
POSTED: May 25, 2008
CASSADAGA — Memorial Day preparations and observances start early for members of Cassadaga Memorial American Legion Post 1280, says Robert Connelly, post commander.
Following a 6 a.m. breakfast at the post, members of the Honor Guard will travel to nine local cemeteries where fallen veterans are remembered and rites are topped with volleys of gun shots.
The first ceremonies will be conducted 7:15 a.m. at the Burnham Hollow Corner Cemetery. Then, it’s on to the Christian Cemetery at Bard and Shumla roads, the Old Stockton Cemetery on Hartfield Road, Stockton Greenwood Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Centralia Union Cemetery, Red Bird Cemetery on Route 380, the Picketts Corner Cemetery along Old Route 60, and services at Lily Dale.
In addition, local Legionnaires will take part in the Sinclairville Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies at Evergreen Cemetery before returning to the post to line up for the Cassadaga parade, scheduled at 11:20 a.m.
Marching units will proceed from Ames Common to Veterans Circle at the Cassadaga Cemetery, where the traditional Memorial Day program will take place. Immediately following those ceremonies, the flag will be raised and a 21-volley salute fired at the front of the Legion Post on Maple Avenue.
Those final rites, Connelly said, signal food and refreshments for all at the post.
