ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The art of Civil War soldier and renowned Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford is on display at the New York State Museum as part of its Civil War commemoration.
"Sanford Gifford's Civil War" opened over the weekend and will run through March 23. It's presented in conjunction with "An Irrepressible Conflict: The Empire State in the Civil War," which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Gifford paintings are from the New York State Military Museum's collection in Saratoga Springs.
New York State played a pivotal role in the Civil War. Its citizens included abolitionist leaders, prominent politicians and generals, and masterful artists who fought in the war.
