True, many who don't play sports get involved in music or any number of things. I'm all for all of it. But one has to wonder why all of a sudden many schools can't field a team. Mergers are fine but I think more should be done to get young kids out on the field. True again, you can't worry about splitting up friends. But you also can't say it's important to keep friends together one minute and it's not the next. I think that's what really bothers parents is a schools moving policies.

I never participated in after school athletics and I don't feel I ever missed out on anything. I do agree with the writer but for a different reason... the kids won't have to travel as far. It's ok to compete against former allies. It happens in the 'real world' all the time. Keeping friends is a terrible excuse. If they want to be friends, invite them over and play in the backyard every so often. People have phones, and even more intimate, cell phones, with which to communicate and propagate friendship.

All schools should have a plan in place for increasing participation in athletics. You learn things on the field, court, or diamond you can't learn anywhere else. Mergers should be plan B, plan A is to get our kids back involved in High School sports.
