I feel for the grape growers, but what about all the other businesses that are affected by poor weather conditions. I have often wondered why farmers seem to have the edge over other businesses when they have a poor year. Many businesses are affected by lack of snow, too much rain, no rain, etc. So when they have a bumper crop do they repay any of the aid? My guess is no.

I have lived here all my life but didn't realize until the last few years how important the grape industry is to our area and how much it contributes to our economy. It is a big gamble for those who invest their money and effort all year and sometimes see the weather wipe our their work and investment. I 'm sorry to see a lot of "sour grapes" in these comments(couldn't resist). I hope the vineyards get all the assistance they can to minimize their losses. I am not a vineyard owner and only know them from visiting their wineries and talking with them. I have read that western New York is one of the best areas to grow grapes in the United States. We need to take full advantage of our natural resources for all of our benefit.

If a grape vine can not stand a Chautauqua County winter perhaps it should not be grown here. The farmer took a gamble and lost, tax payers should not have to reimburse him for his loss. Re-evaluate and grow what thrives in Western NY.

What about the other farms in the area and what about the people who are faced with paying high utility bills due to the unusually cold winter. At least the wine and grape farmers have crop insurance that will cover some of their losses.
