School District Mergers Should Be Academic

January 26, 2014

There were a couple of interesting articles in the paper last week on high school football mergers: one about the Bemus Point and Chautauqua Lake school boards renewing their decision to have one......

If this county had 1 large school district and that school was NOT in Jamestown, you would have so much bi tching about mergers that it would be deafening.

Merging sports is now a problem. Westfield let Brocton join their football team, now Westfield is getting their butts sued for a Brocton player's death. I'm sure that their happy with their merger. However, merging schools should happen: All schools in a county should merge to form one giant school district.

These comments are idiotic and never backed up and that's why they are unsigned.

To many small minds in our county, its a turf war, the people who live in small towns dont want to give up their identity that having a high school gives them. '

Forget about the fact that kids in some schools don't have the opportunity to take AP classes for free college credit, or to be on winning athletic teams because they dont have enough guys to fill out a 15 man wrestling team and have to forfeit 6 weight classes which makes it near impossible to win a match with a rival team.

Ok, so your kids have to ride the bus for 30 minutes to school the next township to get a better education... Its worth it.

When the adults want to do what's best for the adults they will claim it's all about the kids everytime. I guess the author doesn't quite get this. These mergers are not quite as simple as some make them sound. Everybody has their own agenda, politics come into play. When somebody says "it's all about the kids," that's usally a good time to hide the kids.

You keep writing these articles Hal but, you never back them up. Lets see some figures. The only reason you don't put up numbers to back up your statements is, there really is no savings. You tell us how much we're going to save and maybe some will listen to you. We're waiting.

Phil LoGuidice said this county should have four school districts. How long ago was that? We have 17 and a semi regional BOCES. Hey I will go for six even but 17: inefficient, expensive, antiquated and way too traditional for the future of our children. So if this is true why are the children not first in this issue, WHY?
