County Home Vote Was Too Political

November 18, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I was flabbergasted when I learned that our County Legislature had turned down the sale of the county home by one vote! Even was more confused when I read the objections the......

Has anyone asked the families under the "new" owners about the quality of care their loved ones are getting? I know some homes that, while receiving kudos for jobs well done, many are in reality sacrificing care. One of my one was in one of these 5 star places, and we were told patients got high quality care. So when we checked them out sometime later, we found they weren't getting the best care. 1 shower maybe every ten days, and were constantly being harassed by certain employees. So go ahead. Sell it. Sell it to someone who you know little about.

Why do the naysayers revert to the politics of personal destruction when they don't get their way? It's way past time to sell the County Home.

And take the word of CarterMK, whom we know little about? I think not.

now we can look forward to more obstruction over "concerns" about the new owners. This has been such a monumental no brainer it is astounding. Even is the new ownership was an arm of al kaida with Pol Pot's son as the chairman of the board...sell this thing.. enough already!

OK, settle down everyone. There is a new County Executive and Legislature taking the reins on January 1. The obstructionists from the last Legislature have gone away so there is an excellent chance that the County Home will be properly privatized by sale to new owners in 2014. If you are concerned about making sure it's sold, you should contact your 2014 Legislator. And, if you do, remind them of how this election went for those who stubbornly refused to represent the interests of their constituents on this issue. The voters must continue to speak to their representatives.

You're exactly right, Leo. I can't speak to the quality of care a new owner would provide but it should be better than what CarterMK asserts or NYS should put that owner out of business. Also, families would avoid using a poorly run home which would result in that operator going out of business unlike a taxpayer subsidized operation where there are no economic consequences.

I think Mr Wilcox is making much ado about nothing. The Republican super majority in the county legislature will undoubtedly sell the county home at the earliest opportunity. They'll probably sell the county airports and who knows what else.

The buyer guaranteed that no jobs would be lost but did he guarantee those jobs wouldn't become minimum wage, "apply for SNAP and Medicaid if you don't earn enough?" Where's the rating system that grades senior homes' employees? Are they getting a living wage or a pittance that makes them eligible for the social safety net?
