Stop Translating And Start Demanding English Be Our Primary Language

June 18, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I read with interest the editorial stating a Hispanic Navigator is needed. No we don’t. We need English as our national language....

The United States does not and will not ever have an official language because the USA is for ALL people. If people want to continue on like this with all the hate and rhetoric we will end up being a communist country one day. Nobody is allowed here unless they speak English, make FS recipients go to a warehouse and get designated food items. Don't give an education to Hispanics. Stop feeding poor kids at the summer playground etc. etc... YOU people who think this way are sick and selfish and have much studying to do about the true values America was built on. My Grandparents immigrated here. My Grandmother always said she wished she had a chance to learn English the proper way. She could read and write English but it took her most of her adult life to learn. Give people help and some may surprise you. Some will continue to be scumbags and do nothing because that is their character. We have plenty of American born, English speaking, scumbags around here too

I wish everyone the best!

That should have been, "Natürlich, wenn mann auch Deutsch spricht!" phd1960. You got it wrong on both counts.

Lone, the test is rudimentary and shows a minimal competency in English. It is the same ability I have of going to Russia and using my Russian language skills to answer basic questions. It certainly is not a fluent use of English language.

Also, is the irony lost on you that you keep copying and pasting from a website which is available in Spanish?

We get one or two when they read the name loner. Nothing to do with content.

S;panish is not the language of our tourist trade, or business trade. It's the language of the people who break our laws and intend to break our country...just like the one they came from.

Patty, can you share with me how the third sector (charities, churches, etc) can provide for the needs of about 20% of society?

Additionally, most people commenting here clearly do not understand the complexity of immigration in the US. As the US has no national language, the use of English is de facto. It is only in isolated, fairly homogeneous communities such as ours where this debate is held.

To be productive on a global scale, it is important to speak various languages. Too much emphasis on English only will have a negative impact on the US's GDP.

Last, people think that welfare provides an easy life. Go ahead and try to live on welfare. I'll give you 10 to 1 you cannot make it the month.

All other groups paid their way, or had a friend or relative translate when needed. Only Latinos think they rate special treatment.

I thought this article by Elaine by intelligent, straight forward, and gave an excellent money-saving solution. Every person in the U.S.A. should be required to learn and speak English. It is the basis of our melting pot, which is almost non-existent today because it is not honored as the basis of citizenship. I agree 100% with the writer, and no one should be given welfare or federal benefits who is not a citizen. Churches or private charities can take care of emergencies.

The Amish speak their own language but they also speak English. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Seadog asked when have we heard a group speaking their own language at WalMart and the Amish came to mind.

Point, set and match, Seadog. You've just proven your postings here have no value at all.

I'm going to assume that the "disagree" is from Seadog who doesn't have the cojones (oops, I slipped into Spanish again) to come out of his hidey-hole and respond intelligently.

I should add that you don't have to scroll all that far, the first few results actually, if your brain is working.

HOLY CRAP! The stupidity astounds me! You do perceive the difference between results for "Emily" and "Emelye" don't you? Scroll until you get to the correct spelling under "Jamestown NY Transgender Day of Remembrance, 2012 | Facebook". I can't believe I'm really doing this for you. Again I say, another example if why the town is sinking so fast.

OMG, Seadog, you really are more stupid than I imagined. "Emelye Jamestown". Keep scrolling and continue other searches from info you find. CAN YOU THINK FOR YOURSELF? No wonder you post such idiocy here.

Emelye: Out of curiosity some time ago I did do a search for you online. It was very simple and I'm glad to have a better sense of who you are and the work you're doing. Now if the simpletons here can't do the same, it's only another example of how easy it is for evil doers to manipulate the xenophobic, tin-hat wearing, tea-partying, haters among us.

To correct (before Seadog uses it for his next comment), I was referring to the progression of English being taught and used in other non-English nations (most notably, East Asia).

"I didn't realize the 60s and 70s were "the turn of the century."

There's this thing, it's a bit scholarly...it's called "context". Now, if one recognizes context, they would see that I was referring to the "progression" of English over the past 100 years. I suppose I could have said, "English is half the light years ahead of where it was in the 70's and half the light years behind where it was at the turn of the 20th century." That would satisfy your absurd picking.

Seadog seems to appreciate the fine art of side-stepping core issues and factual information in favor of a more rudimentary tactic of feigning ignorance to being presented information. I wish I was as averse to facts. Must be an easy life to live with head in the sand.

As for the rest of your post...all I can do is laugh. Have fun hovering over the PJ tonight. LOL.

" I'll also bet they weren't dependant on Social Services for all of their needs..."

Yep, back then it was a local parish, synagogue, or Protestant house of worship who supplied provisions. Even though, they still were a cultural center than retained the customs and language of the people using them. Nowadays, churches are too busy parading at Tea Party rallies (see the Reverend Mel) than taking care of their flocks' needs.

I guess for some, all the festivals around here are just another day to get drunk. For those who understand their significance, they recognize they were a gathering point for cultures which still continue in the United States - ones which were pushed and pulled by the 50s4evers and Seadogs of yesterday...those who know not history and are doomed to repeat it.
