June 2, 2013

To the Readers’ Forum: I would like to say a big thank you to David Chase for addressing a problem near and dear to my heart in a recent edition of The Post-Journal....

Helen, I would like to thank you for your community service. I pick up trash from both sides of the road along my property but it pales in comparison to what you accomplished. It is beyond sickening that there are so many "pigs" in our society. A couple of possible solutions would be to have supervised county prisoners do some of the picking up as well as having those receiving public benefits doing perhaps 16 hours of community service a week in return.

I also very much admire the author's efforts here. I suggest thinking of ways to place the burden of clean-up on those doing the littering. One thought is the use of hidden cameras rotated among selected areas. I just did a quicky web search on this idea and I see it's already being done. On top of this, fines should be increased to more than offset the cost of maintaining this system and secondly, part of the penalty should include at least a full day doing what the author has been doing for years... picking up roadside trash. This seems feasible to me.

I also pick up trash thrown out by city people, liberals, young people, welfare recipients, and spectators going to and from the Saturday stock car races. I say use cameras, DNA, police behind blinds, whatever it takes. Make the guilty pay and suffer. It would be best to allow the property owners to beat them up but if we have to be civilized, put them in a stocks or pillory.

Pretty soon the grass will grow high enough and you won't see a thing. I call it recycling.

"they would just raise their prices..."

False. In the reality of competition, businesses do not 'pass the buck'. They eat the buck.
