Moderration - I witnessed an act like that. Pulled over to remove a pond turtle from the road and saw a white van come over the turn (route 380 near Ross Mills). Hit it and it spun around but it was unhurt.

I used to stop all the time to move turtles off the road when I lived in Florida. A few years ago there was a HUGE snapper in the road about a mile from my house. I stopped to move it but he/she was having no part of it. It hissed and kept turning to face me when I tried to get behind it. Eventually it left the road on its own and went into the creek. Snappers are very smelly creatures. The other day I was surprised by a very large milk snake down by the creek. Pretty things. Harmless, but I don't mess with them.

Last summer I saw a turtle trying to cross Rt. 394. By the time I was able to turn and go back to help it cross, someone had squashed it. The turtle was in the middle of the traffic lane and traffic was very light, so I believe that whoever ran it over did so on purpose. I understand that some people regard this as sport, but you have to be pretty low and worthless to enjoy squashing a helpless turtle.

It's egg laying season for turtles. Interestingly, I found one about the size of a small chicken egg in my garage yesterday. What was unusual was that it had a 3/4" sticker on its shell.

I appreciate people that do this and now I always stop to help a turtle... just helped one a few days ago and was worried as I was walking to the turtle with cars coming that he'd get smushed but thankfully all the vehicles swerved around him.
