May 22, 2013

With the right mindset, an area church put a positive spin on an unfortunate event after its building was vandalized early Monday morning....

50's 5:54 -

Do you know the origins of why the Catholic church decreed that suicide is a mortal sin? You see, in the middle ages so many people were committing suicide to reach heaven that they had to put a stop to it. Look it up.

So, Lone, you're not excepted if you're Hindu, Moslem, etc? You're not excepted if you believe Scriptures are parables, allegory, subject to interpretation? You're not excepted if you think inclusion in the Christianity is radically inclusive, that you don't have to leave your brain at the door? You're not excepted if you believe we're all on the same journey of understanding, regardless of the path we're on?

And I feel compelled to ask HeLives if s/he agrees with the key statement of the church's statement: "without exceptions!" I suspect s/he can come up with a lot of exceptions.

Bad news! I'm not defending religion because I'm so religious...but because I don't like hypocrites who find religion bashing so easy and popular.

Everybody, please, you have to agree that not all Christians are of the fundamentalist, inerrant scripture, hateful, my-way-or-the-highway ilk. Those people seem to have co-opted "Christian" to the horror of other believers. Whatever your position on religion, think of this church as a community of people who think before acting and have compassion for all. (Time for 50s to chime in with "boo-hoo-hoo".)

Thinker-where did you come up with religion as the major cause of suicide "historically"?

"accept people for whom they are"..unless of course, they want you to believe in their religion? They really should see things your way, after all. You don't have to go to church and you don't have to read their material. Where's the force feeding?

Rational 11:18, I agree.

I have been thinking this over all day and am still struggling with how to interpret this "message".

Whether an act of vandalism or not, its still should be treated as a cry for help.

Be it small community or large community, WE lack the decency to be there for others.

Churches and religions have their place, but the idea that I should be force fed your believes are wrong and is what continues to push people away. Not only from church, but from each other.

I will re-state a comment I made many weeks ago. "Don't give me the sign of peace, when you treat me like crap the next 6 days and 23 hours!"

Do one thing today, tomorrow and the next. Be a friend to someone and accept people for whom they are!

I also sincerely doubt that this act of vandalism was religiously motivated anyhow... I imagine it was simply an act done by some disrespectful youth simply going for the 'shock value' of it.

I would like nothing more than to prove, scientifically either the existence, or lack thereof, of any sort of deity. However, we all know that such a surety is regrettably impossible. And the debate between theists and atheists is hopeless as well, neither side being able to 'prove' their beliefs correct. What we can do however is live well, and be decent people, showing respect and compassion to others. And if we die, and there's a heaven? Great. If not? Well, at least we lived a good life. Personally I do not completely discount the possibility of some form of continuation of energy past the moment of death. That, however, is a far cry from the existence of an omnipotent creator who is responsible for everything that ever is, was, or will be. And ironically, what causes the most suicides, historically? Religion. Go figure.

"Frankly I think you have just as much chance to get to Heaven as you do to get to Santa's Workshop...more focus should be spent on the life you're living, not on the afterlife you aspire to."

Your comments are very insightful but not very rational if you think about it.

First, the "life you are living" you imply stops at some point. You have scientific proof there is no Soul or Spirit? To this I'd like to learn more about.

50s4ever Where is the outrage?

The outrage your looking for is felt within every Christian seeing The Lord's House painted on. However Martin Luther did the same and nailed a bunch of papers he wrote to the Vatican's front door!

With Political Correctness all over and tying to remove "GOD" from work or school or tv we do a disservice because we have a soul.

Body, Soul and Mind. The question being asked is about FEAR. So the answer is, Love casts out all fear - God is Love.

The Duality of God is - Wrath and the Mercy.

God Hates Sin but Jesus Died for your Sin and made a way with FORGIVENESS.

Once the shock goes away, the only answer is...God still loves us.

Frankly I think you have just as much chance to get to Heaven as you do to get to Santa's Workshop in the North Pole. Seeing as how they're both fictitious imaginings. All theological differences aside however I think, regardless of whether or not you are a theist, more focus should be spent on the life you're living, not on the afterlife you aspire to.

Guardian: they did mention that there was other vandalism committed at the same time. However, this story wasn't about the vandalism itself, but about Grace Episcopal's response to the vandalism committed against them specifically.

Someone wrote "Satans House" across the doors at the Catholic church that same morning. I wonder why no mention of that was made?

The church did the right thing. My question is where are the parents of those involved? Better parenting may have been the answer. Do we reap what we sow?

Committing any crime is always a scream for help.......right? You should prosecute...and let God be the one to have mercy on their soul.
