William J. H. Boetcker wrote those.

An outspoken political conservative, Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots that emphasizes freedom and responsibility of the individual on himself. Originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln.

The mistake of crediting Lincoln for "The Ten Cannots" has been repeated many times, notably by Ronald Reagan in his address to the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston.

Thanks, Bud. I was just about to post the same comment about the false attribution to Lincoln. Given that the Internet provides instant access to research, you'd think people would take a minute to check their "facts."

Who ever said it, sounds like solid wisdom to me.

those ten cannots sound just like what the democrap party lives by. We need to vote out all of both parties and put some people in there with common sense.

This has inspired me to write a letter to the editor listing Ronald Reagan's top 10 maxims and quotes favoring a socialist government over a free capitalist society.

Who said "ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country"?

Sounds like something a outspoken tea party conservative would say.

First and foremost: Lincoln never said them! More research should have been done, and the P-J eds should have checked the quotes, since it wasn't an Op-Ed piece, merely quotes.

The actual quote is: “That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence built.”

Abe wanted good examples for the less well off to follow. He didn't say the rich shouldn't be paying their fair share. "A house divided cannot stand," would be better, as it seems the country is the 1% wealthy ruling the 99% that's not.

But alas! Lincoln did not say these things. They were written in 1916 by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian clergyman and pamphlet writer. In 1942, a group called the Committee for Constitutional Government gave out a great many leaflets entitled "Lincoln on Limitations" that contained on one side a real Lincoln quote and on the other side the 10 Boetcker statements. Boetcker was credited with his statements on the leaflet, but their proximity in print to one real quote by Lincoln, plus the title of the leaflet, led people to think that Lincoln had said the ten listed statements. They were repeated in many printed sources, and are still regarded by many as authentic Lincoln quotes. Carl Sandburg, Lincoln's most famous biographer, dismissed them as spurious.

These people who got rich through wall street, outsourcing jobs overseas, special interest groups, etc... play by different rules. They only care about their own interests and got rich in real sleazy ways. Everybody rich and poor needs to play by the same rules. The super rich think they are exempt! The average person if they stole a flat screen tv worth $1000, then they become a felon. A banker steals billions and nothing happens to him/her, because he/she has enough money and power to make it go away. Very UnAmerican!!

khulumzurug was correct that Abraham Lincoln never said these 10 quotes. Go to a search engine and type in "Abraham Lincoln" and "The ten cannots" and you will see that William Boetcker wrote these quotes. It was an easy mistake to make, because many conservative groups on the Internet have tried to pass it off as the work of Abraham Lincoln.

I believe the government needs to regulate things, so no person can take advantage of millions of Americans. I want to make my own money, I don't want govt money and at the same time, I don't want the rich taking advantage of their power to pay less taxes and take the money that millions Americans paid in taxes. If social security money would of stayed untouched by the greedy politicians, this program would have produced more than enough money. You can't generate interest from the trillions of dollars that social security has if there is no money to make any interest!!!

I see the left cant argue the merits of the quotes so they nitpick about who wrote them.Who gives a ****. And Thomas go back and check out what party took social security out of it's own private fund and put it in the general fund. And which party decided to start taxing social security.Democrats thought there was so much money in the social security fund they would never be able to use it all.We see how that worked out didnt we,like every other thing the govt gets it's hands on

"I see the left cant argue the merits of the quotes so they nitpick about who wrote them.Who gives a ****."

Scholars care. Then again, scholar is a word that is foreign to you.

Here, I found something you said, crosshairs:

"I like Obama and wish he would take over the world."

See how I attributed to you? Must be true!

I like how Rufus' comment has one thumb up while Mrs.Gios has 3, posted at the same time, 20 min ago. More user ID fraud. You can hide from the forum but it's too bad, you can't hide deception from the Creator.
