Oh, Carlaw, speak of what you know. As a teacher of older children, I can tell you there is a clear advantage when children attend a pre-k program. It is glaringly obvious which children do not. And, also, the state of NY has a written and challenging pre-k curriculum. Children who do not receive that curriculum start off with a need to "catch up"when the enter kindergarten, any many never do.

Years ago I would have agreed with carlaw. Not now. I ask, what are these kids going to be doing at home? I'll say, they are sitting in front of the TV watching what some people call kids shows. All trash. They are better off now days being out away from the TV. Might as well be in a school environment. Picking up on learning disabilities early, is also a plus for a mapping plan when they hit kindergarten and first grade. Possible correcting a problem early will no doubt save districts money. Not perfect I know, but better than the kids in front of the TV trash until their 5.

Do a bit of research on Common Core and then tell me you are enthusiastic. I did and I am NOT.

As a former educator who has taught at the University level as well as Secondary: there is good news and bad news: early intervention works and is helpful..however, by 3rd grade the net gain has been diminished to the baseline n most cases... I guess the only real benefit is free babysitting for the working poor... hmm
