America Needs To Return To God

@apologeticsnow Since people cannot agree on the meaning of the words in the Bible, yes, we have to rely on self-definition. When there was general agreement, it did not have to be self-defining, but we're back at least 500 years for that.

apologeticsnow, how can you claim my opinion was self refuting simply because it's at odds with your opinion? I think you don't have your statements questioned enough. This forum must be one of the few places. You'd be better at debating them if you did.

PS apologeticsnow and Blackwatch - Buddhists, Muslims, and many other religions that exist in the USA don't follow the Apostle's Creed. Your use of biblical Christian verse and tradition to justify your opinions fails because of this fact.

I don't see one darned thing in the creed about forcing one sects dogma onto the rest of the population via civil law. You've missed my point once again.

So self, not the Bible, defines what a Christian is?

@Apologeticsnow Because they say they are Christian. Because they interpret the Bible their own way. That was my point; it's self-defining. All the time we hear folks saying who is not a Christian. Roman Catholics seem to get this a lot from Baptists. People say that about Mormons, too. But just as many people say they are Christians. Really, these groups just don't agree. If someone or a denomination says they're Christian, you kind of have to accept it, even though you can disagree about whether they engage in false beliefs, have weak doctrine, etc. That's what I meant by self-defining.

Belief in the catholic church, the saints? That is not the deciding factor in being a Christian. It's the factor of being Catholic.

So what makes those liberal denominations Christian if they can't even agree to the Apostles' Creed?

Okay...just wondering...when was the last time you went to church? For me, last Sunday. Not bragging, just wondering how many of the folks who have commented actually go to church?

@Blackwatch...not true. There are several liberal denominations that do not believe the Apostle's Creed or make it optional. You might say those people aren't Christians, but really it's a matter of self-definition.

You seems to think that Christians are divided upon denominational lines and therefore are segregated from each other. So, just for you, below is what ALL Christian's believe.

"Apostles' Creed" year, 390 AD

I believe in God,the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;he descended into hell;on the third day he rose again from the dead;he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.[

Its funny how the sheep who claim they know their god, and thus have a moral superiority, love to call others 'swine'.

Not funny 'haha'. Funny 'ironic'.

God LOVES Science. Look how he head his loyal followers persecute Galileo.

Jesus "cured" leprosy for a few individuals, a true God or son of a God could have cured ALL leprosy, if they loved Humans.

God's love showed in Polio, until Science's love cured it.

Jazzie, one day EVERY knee will bow and EVERY tongue confess that Jeseus Christ is Lord. In my heart of hearts I hope that you realize this before "your time" comes. Eternity is a long, long time. Separated from the love of God, and subject to eternal physical and emotional (which I believe will be worse) torture. I can't fathom it.

Clueless, your ""The fool hath said in his heart there is no God!" comment tells me that you have chosen te wrong moniker. If you know God, you are NOT clueless. The agrees/disagrees with most of the comments here tels me that we (as a people) are not totally lost. Believers, please pray for those who are blinded by the Evil One. God wants them back, too. God bless ALL of you.

bobbojr, I agree with your "Learn first" comment, IF it means learning (and practicing) the content and precepts of the Bible. That is what is MOST important in life. MacKenzie, you are correct that we are to love and respect everyone, but not necessarilly their actions. God loves the sinner, but hates the sin.

Emelye, when you write, It's ridiculous to write such a poorly thought out letter and even more nonsensical to argue religion in a newspaper website. (I'll jump in and say that is your opinion, which is fine but why should I believe it? "If you want to improve the world, work on the one person you have absolute control over: yourself. Leave the other people to work on themselves and stop trying to impose your standards and beliefs on everyone else! If we can manage that then maybe we CAN make our country a better place," your assertion assumes a moral standard. From where do you get that moral statement that we should exercise self-control. It sounds very biblical to me. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control and the Scripture emphasizes the ethic of individual responsibilty. Also do you want to impose your belief that we should stop imposing beliefs on others? Your belief sounds self-refuting.

The premise of the letter is being attacked by bringing into question even the exitence of God. If that premise is not the one on which to start, then what is that premise? In other words, what is the starting point other than God?

I find it amusing to see letters saying our country needs to return to God with the inherent assumption that the God they are talking about has universal definition. We get the same kind of baseless assumptions in the right wing christianist political organizations that work so diligently to turn our country into a theocracy.

But that begs the question - whose God are we talking about? Look at how many different denominations there are in Christianity alone, let alone all the other religions that disagree about the nature of God and our relationship to the Deity. It's ridiculous to write such a poorly thought out letter and even more nonsensical to argue religion in a newspaper website. If you want to improve the world, work on the one person you have absolute control over: yourself. Leave the other people to work on themselves and stop trying to impose your standards and beliefs on everyone else! If we can manage that then maybe we CAN make our country a better place.

I used to think "end times" was a phrase uttered by the old folks to scare us kids. Now I see the breakdown of the family and society happening right before my eyes. I'm sure people were spitting on eachother's beliefs and positions at calvary and before the flood as well. Try to maintain your composure when arguing with eachother. The true answer will not be known until the time comes. We have no one to blame for the choice we make but ourselves. God loves people even when they don't love him. anger and resentment boil through every post fan18. Sorry for what happened to you.

I'm pretty sure that a God who gave me a mind to ask questions would torture me for eternity for using it. But if so, at least I won't have to hang out with pious, self-righteous and condescending folks who tell me that's where I'm going. Or maybe I will.
