Move To November Election Is The Right Choice

March 15, 2013

Elections will be held Tuesday for mayors, trustees and justices in 12 Chautauqua County villages. That’s 12 too many, in our opinion....

Town of Gerry should be next since the leaders spend our money so freely with one of the counties taxes!

I agree 100% with this editorial. The outcome of the village elections, if held in November, would be more representative of the village. The number of people who come out and vote in March is very low. Mostly, just family, friends, neighbors of those running and the few others who are paying attention show up to vote, probably not even 10% of the electorate. Change would be good and it would save a little money.

For those who wonder why village elections historically were not held in November, it was because the old lever machines didn't have enough room to fit everything during a busy election year. Yes, it now makes sense to move to November.
