March 10, 2013

The intersection of Washington and Fourth streets is buzzing with traffic. There’s nothing particularly unusual about it. The intersection is one of the busiest in the city....

There is a mentality that let's some think that rules are for others. If they need to run a red light, they feel it's ok because what they need supersedes everything else. We have noticed this increasing the last few years and try to avoid the City whenever possible especially at high traffic times. Maybe cameras will convince some that they are not entitled to everything they desire.

I agree with carlaw. Cars have been running red lights more and more! That 5 way intersection: Buffalo at 2nd street - I drive it at least twice a day and each time, nearly each time, someone runs a red. A school bus ran it this week, going straight up Buffalo, after my light on 2nd street turned green!

I'm not defending anyone who runs a light, BUT I have noticed that Jamestown seems to have unusually short amber light durations on their lights. What is interesting about that is that studies show that short amber light durations cause more red lights to be run. I'm not suggesting that Jamestown is trying to make profits by doing that, I'm just commenting on how short the amber duration is compared to almost every other area in NYS and that by lengthening the duration by an extra second could do a lot to alleviate running red lights by giving people longer to respond. It is well documented.

This article is an interesting read: bit.ly/ZwbxXX

I understand what you're writing, Heckler, but it extends beyond a short amber. Cars are running reds so late, the cross street already has a green. And there is a pause between red on one street and green on the cross street.
