I have no problem with your beliefs Lirud as long as you respect mine. The article written was about public education, not the Heritage Foundation. The foundation was the source I used. duckster got it. The article was a response to two articles previously written by two people, I was responding to those articles, D. Nelson wants us to become like Europe I simply disagree, Hall Elliott is for regionalizing, I disagree. Clearly zedman only got half of it, I don’t think unions should be running public education but that’s a debate for another today. The article was about Federal control and how badly it has effected education. Readers Forum has a 400-word limit, Public education is very complicated and not all problems can be discussed within that limit. Agree or disagree with me that’s okay but lets do so at a level that will bring about good results, perhaps then a solution can come of it, A public debate is totally necessary but won’t happen unless someone gets up and does something.

The secular push is good so far. Keeps out creationism and bible myths. Not sure why you bring up 12 year olds and abortions. That's certainly not due to secularism in schools. And the profanity is pretty mild. The word ends in it. Are you telling me never say this word?

Yes it is true we are widely diverse, and that too adds to our many problems in Public education neither Heritage nor I would disagree with anyone on that, and yes social engineering plays a part as well. But who is doing the social engineering? Also, how can anyone overlook the words of NEA’s past president’s “ …it’s not about the children, it’s about power and money” … and thirty thousand teachers stood up and cheered! As far as those states without unions were are they better, worse, or just as bad??? The education reform came from Demarcates for Education Reform not Heritage. Finally, how is the secular push for our children working for you Lilrus? You OK with 12 year olds having babies or abortions? How about 3 year olds having sex education? I believe children should be allowed to be children first, I guess some prefer they go straight to adulthood. And by the way what’s with the profanity? By the way, indoctrination comes from all groups, it just depends what kind you want

Let us set aside the ridiculous Heritage Foundation for a moment: Unlike various foreign countries which educate their children quite well... The USA is a diverse group (unlike Japan or Finland for example where consensus building and social order is more easily obtained) I really think our fascination with diversity, social engineering, and non outcome based results have hurt us. It is indeed a "race to the bottom".

The letter writer makes it clear she believes the problem is all the fault of the "unions". How does she expain the existence of the same or similar problems in states without teacher unions? Could it be she is listening to the wrong people?

Of course it has it's own agenda. Next thing you'll see Heritage pushing is "Intelligent Design" and bringing back school prayer. What education reform has done is bring h&$&@holes like Mississippi and Alabama close to everyone else.

As if the Heritage Foundation doesn't have its own agenda, i.e., religious indoctrination in the guise of parental control.
