"The debate over gun violence leads me to believe there is only one answer - the problem is guns. Guns are the only factor that makes criminals, the mentally ill and emotionally impulsive people effective killing instruments. If guns were taken out of the equation, I don't think anyone can deny that gun violence would cease."--mr. demler.

the first 2 sentences are as obviously wrong as the last sentence is obviously right.

"...gun regulations have become so lax, that they are impossible to control."

interesting. so where's my RPG? do you know anybody with a BAR?

Wow. A letter to the editor on gun violence that is reflective and promotes personal responsibility and you all still can't handle it!

I would venture to speculate that the author firmly believes that Jeanie really does live in the bottle.

"If guns were taken out of the equation, I don't think anyone can deny that gun violence would cease." Absolute genius. Along those lines, if cars were taken out of the equation, not can deny that deaths from traffic accidents would cease. Or if alcohol was taken out of the equation, DWI's would cease to exist. The author clearly misses the point. My guns have not committed any acts of violence. Why are they any different? Oh wait, its the person who owns the guns and their moral integrities. When someone gets a DWI, their license is suspended but do they take their car away? Stop blaming the weapons, that is not the issue, the issue is the lack of sanity in those minority that have them. Why don't you ask the numerous Isrealis who live in fear of bus bombings if guns are a problem. Ask the TSA why guns aren't the only thing you aren't allowed to carry on a plane. Did we outlaw air travel after extremists committed thousands of acts of murder of innocents on 9/11?

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court stated that an absolute firearm ban was unconstitutional. The Court further determined that its decision in Heller does not impinge upon all existing statutes and regulations, such as those that prohibit felons and the mentally ill from owning or possessing firearms.

They are here to stay.

Meant to include this:

On 26 June 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court held that American citizens have an individual right to own guns, as defined by the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

This guy must wake up to "imagine' every morning. 310 million guns (est) in this country, half of which (my guess)cannot be traced. Just how many unannounced night raids and thorough searches would it take to find them? What cost to prosecute? Incarcerate? Litigate?

phil Your dishonesty is of full display when you need to edit a quote so that your point can be made. Any one could do the same with what you have said, turning your words inside out and upside down, but any one could see that is not what you said.

So, by this author's contention, there are no violent crimes that are committed without guns? Is it also his contention that there was no crime before the invention of the firearm? This argument is so ridiculous and, despite a previous commenter's obliviousness, takes all personal responsibility out of the equation by blaming an inanimate object for a person's actions. I can see it now, a rifle creeps into your room in the middle of the night and whispers "kill" in your ear and suddenly you can't control your actions......yeah, that's the ticket.

Why was there less gun crimes (and other)long ago before there were any gun laws at all? Were people nicer then? Smarter? Too busy trying to keep food and shelter? Was it just plain socially unacceptable like in other cultures now being held up as examples?

I just learned that the "Liberals" are not even united on the gun control issue. I just saw an interview with author Dan Baum, who describes himself as a "Jewish Liberal Democrat Gun Guy". He says that he recommends that the Democrats lay off the gun control as many Democrats that he has interviewed are "blue collar gun guys" and because of the gun issue, they no longer are following anything the Democratic Party stands for. I guess we now know who the real extremists are....

Sure we do. Enforce the more than 9000 gun laws currently on the books. Stop Liberal Judges from letting violent criminals out of prison early so they can repeat. Get rid of political correctness so that mental illness can be addressed early without the fear of "stigmatizing" the individual. The reason this gets nasty is because none of the laws being proposed, or passed in the case of NY, will do anything to address the issue. They only affect those of us who are law abiding citizens.

Oh, and stop blaming guns and start blaming people! Guns are inanimate objects and cannot commit a crime. Promote personal responsibility.

Very well stated Mr.Demler. Rational people would agree. Some lose their minds if someone suggests limiting any guns. It is very absurd to think that we should not limit guns at all. I am sure, although the righty wacko's wont agree, that our founding fathers would all agree that there should be laws that limit the guns we have. They would laugh at all of these 2nd Amend. interpretations!
