"We" doesn't fit the US like it does communist China.

David is right-on here:

"They also hate spending money on things that don't generate more income. Add those together, and you have a recipe for being hacked."

I have a number of friends who specialize in computer and network security. Corporations aren't interested in hiring them until after there's a problem.

Let's be honest about this, we know how to protect ourselves, but we're unwilling to do it.

Business wants to be connected. They want to be able to touch others and have them touch back. They also hate spending money on things that don't generate more income. Add those together, and you have a recipe for being hacked. Eventually we'll get smart, but we should keep in mind the history we have in this respect, albeit in the pre-computer era.

In the 19th century, we were like China today, and Great Britain was like us. We stole from them with wild abandon. Even Charles Dickens was a target - we stole his novels and published them without paying him or his publishers a dime. So we should be a bit cautious about yelling that we're being ripped-off.

Now attacks on our infrastructure, on the other hand ...

Let's spend more money on military aircraft that don't work and keep ignoring threats like cyber attacks! The corporations make a lot more money on hardware boondoggles than software security and defense.

We are being had by the military -industrial complex, folks, and their mouthpieces in the political arena keep pulling the wool over our eyes! Get private money's influence out of congressional campaigns or enjoy the fleecing. it's our choice!

The peace was assured by the fear of MAD? I wouldn't say assured. Tenuously kept, maybe. "Gosh, we managed not to blow the world to bits...yet." more likely.

If you have any questions about how close the USSR and the US may have been to accidentally launching missiles at each other, Google Stanislav Petrov. (The Wikipedia article is actually pretty good.)

The Chinese have nothing to steal. Everything they have is stolen. If you want to respond, just forbid American businesses dealing with them. Drop their "favored nation" status.
