Gun Kill Far More Than Hammers

January 23, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: “Truth Above All” is the motto of The Post-Journal, but this paper belied that noble purpose when it posted the cartoon implying that more murders are caused by hammers than......

Correct me if I am wrong, but not even the fast and furious debacle sold full auto weapons even though they would show file clips of them and bazookas on TV reports. The reports were worded like..."of guns traced, --% came for the USA" Right. They didn't bother tracing the ones from Columbia etc. You cannot trust our justice dept.

OMG! Are you so naive you believe an attempt on Obama's life with automatic weapons would not get out?

i find it hard to believe that automatic weapons have been used against a sitting president considering they've been illegal since the 1930s but criminals & the insane are renowned for obeying & respecting laws.

Monkey-the prez and I are not beer buddies. Too bad. Amiable fellow who could have done great good had he been a conservative. Of course, he'd have been killed by now by somebody who didn't think he was black enough.

Abortion kills more than people with guns, dwi, suicide, cancer kills more than people with guns. Guns are not the problem, people are. Guns keep us safe against the government.

There is no more evidence of needing submachineguns to protect him than there is evidence I need them to protect me. Your argument for restrictions on weapons and capacity holds no water. You talk like you pray to this idiot in the White House.

There is no evidence that supports the carry of submachine guns by the secret service. All they have every been up against has not justified it.

hopefully in the very near future we can bid goodbye to the irrelevant button issue, and back to the issue at hand--guns.

I'd agree that the hammer comparison lacks substance. But I urge the author to consider his statistic: 8,583 murders in 2011 were with guns. With an estimated 300,000,000 guns in the country, that means that 0.003% of the guns in the country were used to murder someone, and that's assuming each murder involved a different gun - which isn't likely. Furthermore, I'd be interested to see what percentage of those murders involved illegal guns. I'm willing to bet that percentage is rather high. While the hammer argument is void, this letter provides us with more evidence that guns aren't the problem, and that tougher gun laws won't help.

Nothing hidden....I just hate people who use a censor button to shut up any other side of a topic. Warren is the same thing. They really should have to review the reported abuse before deciding to pull it. Same old stuff, couple of blabbermouths with multiple posts calling everybody out, and reporting anyone who challenges them, some psuedo intellelectuals playing the elitist games....too bad. That's the way the whole country has gone.

50s as I most always agree with your comments. I'm not sure how to precieve your previous post I always try to add a twist of humor while trying to send my point home. In the end that's what our life's consist of its another way of stating the ageless question why are we here and do we have a purpose never even seen the warren paper

With the exceptions of an SKS attempt on Clinton the cheap bolt action rifle on Kennedy, the assassination attempts have been pistols. Mostly cheap ones. Why do the SS need MP5's or once Uzis?

I was under the impression that this site was posted for the intelligent discussion of both sides of the gun safety issue.

I'd like to see them unionize the secret service so Obama can discover he has nobody watching him due to their being on strike, better yet, have to walk through ther picket lines and let them destroy "his" home....he's so big on unions.

Apparantly someone feels that the president,vice-president, their families, etc. are at a much higher risk than the average citizen- but I could be wrong.

my point monk is that law enforcement is entitled to have an ar-15 & they've proven to be just as friggin inept as any other civy with an ar-15.

hang on though somebody will post something about a straw man or non something in a moment because they hate the obvious truth & logic in the post...

...wait for it...

Law enforcement officers in Harris County have shot 65 unarmed people since 1999, killing 17. These incidents represent more than a third of all local police shootings, but experts call them the most preventable.

Amadou Diallo, an unarmed West African immigrant with no criminal record, was 22 years old when he was killed on Feb. 5, 1999, by four New York City police officers.

The officers — Kenneth Boss, Sean Carroll, Edward McMellon and Richard Murphy — acknowledged firing 41 shots that night, but said they thought that Mr. Diallo was carrying a gun. Mr. Diallo, who came to America more than two years before from Guinea and worked as a street peddler in Manhattan, was hit by 19 bullets while standing in the doorway of his Bronx apartment building.

An undercover police detective who fired the first bullets in a 50-shot barrage that killed an unarmed New York City man as he left his bachelor party has been fired and three other officers involved in the slaying will resign, ending a disciplinary process that dragged on for nearly 5½ years.

ooops! but hey that's the only mistakes that cops have ever made in the history of cops!

& their harshest punishment? resignations & civil suits. aw****..

maybe ask the 15 year old & his 12 year old sister why he didn't pick a different gun while there was 1 guy at the front door & 1 guy at the back? stupid kid he didn't need that ar-15 he shoulda thought it out better. i'm sure he had plenty of time to stand in front of the gun case, perusing his options, carefully weighing which firearm would be best, because the bad guys would've noticed his conundrum & waited patiently whilst he made his decision.
