January 22, 2013

No one aware of President Barack Obama’s rhetoric and his background should doubt that if he thought he could get away with it, he would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of......

So the NY Safe Act. The normal Joe can carry 7 bullets in his 10 round magazine. The cop get unlimited as this was initially left out and will be factored in. Even the retired cop gets more than 7. So 4 bad guys decided to come out 1 night. They come to my house. I only have 7 in my magazine. Good luck. They go to the cop's house who lives next to me who is allowed unlimited and those 15 round magazines come in handy fending off the evil. Thank you those making the decisions for penalizing the law abiding citizen. Bad guys play by the rules though we know. They will surely only load 7.

What a lame editorial. The Supreme Court has already ruled that limits can be placed on the the type of gun. The question remains as to where the line is drawn between hunting weapons and military weapons.I'm just tired from the dumb simpleton arguments people make. "I'm a trained law-abiding trustworthy gun owner, why can't I have an AR-15!" Substitute "small nuclear device" for the "AR-15" and it is just as a ridiculous statement!

So let me see if I understand this lame column, PJ. You admit that many of the initiatives Obama has signed or proposed are good ideas and could actually help reduce gun violence, but the rest of the article is about what you think you know is in Obama's mind and what you think he wants to do, but hasn't done and doesn't plan on doing. Pointless.

Fulcrum, excellent points. I was thinking the same thing. Why not legalize hand grenaids, bazookas, SAMs, 50 caliber machine guns, etc etc. Where does it stop? There is abslutely no reason for any citizen in this country to own an AK47 assault rifle unless they intend to do harm. And lets be honest, these gun proposals, this state, or the President are NOT trying to take individuals right to own a firearm like NRA would like for you to believe.

323, that's the number of persons killed with rifles of ALL types (semiauto, bolt, lever, pump, break action) nationally according to the latest year available for the FBI Unified Crime Reports. Those rifles would include the 8-10 million rifles foolishly mis-labeled as "assault weapons. Shotguns of all types accounted for about 450 murders during the same period. Obviously very few of the owners of those 8-10 million "Assault weapons" intended to do anyone any harm, which would seem to indicate that the guns were used for lawful purposes.

Exactly, Yankees1. The conservatives were saying President Obama wanted to take your guns away years ago - before he ever said anything about any type of gun control.

Four children on a stage, whats next"Triumph of the will speech" with mandatory attendance at youth rallies as Hitler did in 1935 He knew how the youth could be influenced at an early age. Parents talk to your children about the importance of freedom. A case in point is the little girl on the bus stop who had a plastic gun that blew soap bubbles. She pointed it at a friend and blew some bubbles at her and received a 10 day school suspension. I forgot to mention she was six years old. Or how about the new patient at the doctors office who gets the forms to fill out and is faced with the question do you have any guns in your home. Or the teachers in school who are asking the students if mommy and daddy have guns in the home.Try as you may the socialist pigs will not win.An armed society is a polite society! Read history and you will find that the only reason the Japanese didn't attack our main land is because our citizens were armed to the teeth. And as it should be. It's about

".An armed society is a polite society!"

And here is the poof, in the past 42 years 1,260,000 people have died of gun violence, twice as many as died in all American wars, in one fifth the time. The gun death rate in the US is four times the total of the next 21 rich nations of the world. How much more polite could we be?

by the way, abortion has been called constitutional by the Supreme Court (conservative supreme court) for how many years? And yet the radical right fights it every day correct? Is that chipping away? The founding fathers wanted citizens to be able to defend themselves from "taxation without representation" remember that? We have representation correct? a majority of citizens want assault weapons regulated. You don't like it VOTE. There is no conspiracy, no dictatorship, no govnerment takeover. you guys are in the minority...you don't like it? come up with some common sense ideas of government instead of "no government, no taxes, more firearms" jeez...the founding fathers would laugh at you knuckleheads.

KCW007: Where is your argument if you add in the other 1,684 murders committed with firearms where the type was not reported. Could any have been with the "assault weapons" you're so sure are being used for "lawful purposes"?

A president should be compelled to respect the constitution, regardless of what the public feels. That's the oath they take. Sadly, modern day politics (left and right) is about personal agenda and getting relected, rather than sticking to principles.

"An armed society is a polite society" is a quote from none other than our founding father Thomas Jefferson!! Ignorance can be taught, but stupidity can't! A lot of loyalist were hung 237 years ago for following blindly into what wasn't to be. I myself choose patriotism, and you loyalist would be wise to do the same.Without an armed society we are all like sheep ready for the slaughter! Who you going to call GHOST BUSTERS. WAKE-UP and realize you are being played like pawns on a chess board.Putting your faith into the politicians is to be very disappointed. Be wise enough to see it for what it is, if you have the capacity.

OMG redbird, really? Thomas Jefferson? wow....wasn't he a slave owner? didn't he subscribe to the theory that the black man was 3/5ths human? Wasn't that in the constitution? they were men, not gods. And at the time it took almost a full minute to load and fire a weapon. How do you think he would feel about 100 rounds in 7 seconds and a black man as president? I know I know you patriots say he isn't really black

It doesn't matter what color he is, he is still a socialist. and as far as multiple rounds per minute.I'm sure he would have loved it.As far as the slave issue is concerned, many took up arms and fought valiantly with the hope of freedom, which set in motion the debate in congress for them to be free. Blame the politicians as you will, its their fault it took almost 100 years for that to happen.Long after our founding fathers were dead and gone.In fact it was one of our founding fathers who represented a ship full of slaves to be taken back in the 1830's a former slave owner himself Mr. Adams. Know your history because it has a habit f repeating itself.

Jefferson also said "The world belongs to the living." He thought every generation should write its own Constitution. If we could write a new Constitution today that conformed to the will of the majority of people it would have strong gun control provisions.
