Of course spending needs to be cut and it will be. Now the P-J is pretending to not know what the debt ceiling really is. That deception is being used to make Obama look bad. Way to help out there, P-J, just as your cohorts in the House are doing.

Oh c'mon, what could POSSIBLY happen? jeesh. It's not necessary to be so concerned....I mean, it's not like we could become completely indebted to China and eventually collapse and rely solely on the gov't. Nope, never going to happen. We live in a fairy tale. Obama is doing what is best for the people in every decision he makes, and the way he goes about putting into place his decisions should prove what a great person he REALLY is :D

A few facts left out of this brilliant piece of journalism (an honest oversight, I'm sure):

The first is the fact that during Ronald Reagan's presidency the debt ceiling was raised 18 times and increased 67%, compared to President Obama's record of 6 times for an increase of 31%. Also, since 1960 GOP presidents have raised the debt ceiling 49 times vs. 30 times by Democrats. Finally, on the first 78 occasions, not once did a small group from the minority party threaten to bring down this country's economy or reduce the United State's credit rating by manufacturing a crisis.

"Finally, on the first 78 occasions, not once did a small group from the minority party threaten to bring down this country's economy or reduce the United State's credit rating by manufacturing a crisis."

patently false as evident by ALL democrats voting no on a debt ceiling raise in '06.

ahhhh the hypocrisy that is the left...

Every day, Republicans and every responsible media person should be showing the video of Obama saying that raising the debt ceiling is UNPATRIOTIC. This was said before he voted against it. Rufus, did you ever hear the saying, "There's lies,*****lies and then there are statistics." It's a fool's game to equate each debt ceiling raise when each one of Obama's is multiple times larger than previous administrations. Then, every day, it should be pointed out that enough money comes into the Treasury each day to pay Soc. Sec. and the military along with our debt obligations. Only partisan fools believe Obama's threats. Thirdly, it should be explained that not raising the debt ceiling until Obama agrees to significant spending cuts will not cause our credit rating to go down, the ratings agencies have already said if Obama continues his spending policies, THAT will result in a downgrade. The U.S. Treasury is NOT Obama's personal piggy bank!

but remember seabisquit, they just avoided spending cuts and tax increases that would have cut the deficit. we should have gone over the cliff and let the chips fall where they may. they didn't have the guts for it and i mean either side.

As reported by Lou Dobbs the other day, a recent Gallup Poll showed gun control as a top priority for only 4% of Americans. Where has Obama been on creating jobs which would increase the tax revenue. He still hasn't OK'd the XL pipeline which would create tens of thousands of good jobs and for what reason? I think the debt ceiling should be raised but only if our country goes back to 2008 spending levels. Get rid of the free cell phones and the Billions Obama has given to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Maybe if the debt ceiling isn't raised, Obama won't keep borrowing from China so he can continue to give hundreds of billions of dollars more to the IMF who,in turn, give it to our enemies. We wouldn't even be needing to raise the debt ceiling if he'd spent the money wisely.

boobybull, how do you come to the conclusion the P-J doesn't understand the debt ceiling? In your next comment, for the benefit of everyone, why don't you share with the rest of us all of the valid reasons for the Senate to have not passed a budget for the last 4 years. Then give us your wisdom in explaining why Obama's budget proposals didn't get a single Democratic vote. If they weren't so ridiculous how come even his party faithful couldn't bring themselves to approve of them. Looking forward to your expertise on these matters.

boobybull, "utter nonsense and not worth a reply" is the answer of ignorance. Integrity on your part would be to give a reasoned and thoughtful answer, not the blah, blah, blah worthy of a pre-schooler.

well it seems worth repeating: The last time the tea baggers tried this debt ceiling hold up it only added to the debt via a standard & poors downgrade. The dollar is sill the world default currency. The roulette wheel stops spinning if or when the dollar falls. Note to Rand Paul and the other baggers who I believe should be urinated on in public: you aren't helping your cause with temper tantrums.. they only hurt us.. I call them tea baggers instead of tea patriots because that is exactly what they are: Tea Baggers worthy of our disdain and contempt.

"...And as a black man, if your people had had guns during the slave trade years, do you think they could have prevented slavery"?

Well, I suppose if a white person bought a black person at an auction, gave that person some money, stopped at a gun show on the way home, told that person to "go ahead and browse and meet back here in an hour", and someone at the gun show sold that person a gun (without a background check), would the outcome be different than reality, I would have to say "yes". It's still an asinine question, though.

Good editorial and Seadog, I like your comments too but the fact of the matter is that President Obama is doing a great job! Congress is not! I don't agree with most of what the President is doing but he is doing, doing and doing. I have never been more disappointed in my life than I am now with the "Loyal" opposition. Obama gets an A+ Congress and the Republicans get an F.

"I know this is a waste of time booby, but can you back up that asinine statement? " ???? the statement that the dems never threatened to overthrow the government? You want me to back that up? well okay, went on google (of course) and could find a few hits but they were links to crazy righties calling for revolution when the "gbmnt*****fer our guns". not sure how to prove something that hasn't happened.

seabisquit, what a silly comparison between the jews in nazi germany and citizens in the U.S. by the way in the Warsay Ghetto uprising the jews did indeed have guns but i digress. this goverment is NOT coming for your guns. this government in not nazi germany, this government is not communist russia no matter how many times you try to make that comparison.

" If the Jews would of had guns, do you think 6 million would have been gased? Sure, history of full of examples of a small minority with light weapons and limited ammunition defeating huge well trained armies with tanks heavy artillery and aircraft. They would have been killed in their homes, the Germans would not have had to ship them to the camps. Much of the world would have seen the killings as justified. Great example.

Carlaw, usually I think you have fairly well-reasoned opinions but I must say you giving Obama an A+ is disappointing. When you say he's getting things done, it's usually in the way a banana republic dictator would go about it. As for Congress, the Republican House has passed budgets along with 50+ more bills that Harry Reid hasn't even allowed to come to a vote. Only the gullible would think he isn't taking marching orders from Obama. Obama tells Reid to do nothing so he can blame Congress and then writes Executive orders for things he knows could never pass through Congress, bills he knows his own Democrats wouldn't vote to pass. And then we come to the duckster. The duckster says the downgrade was because of the Republicans. As Clinton would say if it were the Republicans, "It's the SPENDING stupid". The other ratings firms have already said that continuing with Obama's deficits will cause a downgrade even if the debt ceiling is raised.
