Times Have Changed Since 1963

January 9, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: How times have changed. When I was a student at Jamestown High School I took a Retailing class, Russell Abbott was the teacher....

I have to agree with the author, here. Times have changed. We have better antibiotics, safer cars, better sanitation, better sense in not allowing kids to bring guns to school, computers, better knowledge of the dangers of tobacco, advancing cancer treatments...

Yep, times have changed.

While certain things will always keep evolving, American society is not. Whether Jamestownfan wants to admit it or not, people are devolving in this country. Respect, morals, and integrity are slowing being thrown away. Granted some things should be changed, there are a lot of them are getting worse. Americans don't need to speak English, they don't need to pull their pants up. Food and clothing do not come before TV's, cell phones, computers, etc. The American agenda is pretty screwed up right now. We won't be able to head down this current path for much longer. Mommy and Daddy will not be able to support every child until 30.

At my school many people had guns in the back window of their pickup trucks with the shells on the seat with the windows down.

Wow, have things changed.

Why are kids killing kids today when there used to be many more guns at school yrs ago?

Jamestownfan18:: If we are really going to be honest here we have indeed devolved. Yes you make a good point about medicine and technology. These are two fields we have rapidly advanced in. In most other areas we have gone backwards hence the word "devolved". It has little to do with guns and even our movement towards secularism. The culprit? It mostly goes to the breakdown of the nuclear family.

I remember kids in my school bringing a shotgun to class for as part of his demonstration speech on how to properly clean it. I think he had to also get permission from the school, but it was granted. I also remember gun racks with shotguns in the back window. This was in the early 90s. Times have indeed changed, but so has society.

On a side note (and just as an issue of semantics), jamestownresident26 - When something "evolves", it does necessarily mean it is improving. It simply means "change." So Society has indeed evolved over time. Whether it is for the better or for the worse is open to conjecture. Also, the word "Devolve" has an entirely different meaning than how you used it in your post.

Nice article. I graduated in 1982 and my school experience was much the same as those mentioned. A jackknife was always in my pocket, as that is what my Father taught me. Guns and ammo were everywhere, very accessible. Obviously, our problems of mass shootings exist today because of all the assault weapons....uh-huh....yep...that's it for sure! ;)

Sorry to be nit-picky but I think it is important that we know the meaning of the words we use. I am guilty of this myself - no one is perfect - so my comment about Devolving was not intended as a negative or refute your belief. Just wanted to clarify the meaning. After all, what good are words if we don't know how to use them?

Duck, I agree. Where is our family life? -Stores open on Sundays. - Over 100 cable channels. - Computers, playstations and now smartphones. Am I part of the problem with 3 children? Probably, but it also takes a community to raise a child and I have crappy neighbors who complain about my kids having fun. In this case, my kids would rather stay inside instead of getting dirty looks because their ball went into the neighbors yard. The sad part is, these neighbors had kids at one time!

I think jamestownfan is just stuck behind that computer screen... Yes there are things that are better but there are also ALOT of things that have gotten much worse, medicine for one. Have you read whats in the "vaccines" or the insert on medicine that is for people with depression or adhd, just to name a few, the insert says it causes suicidal tendencies and worsens psychiatric conditions, yep way better than au naturel).

And the disrespect from these younger people these days, Im not very old myself but my mother brought me up right, yes ma'am, no sir, yes please, no thank you, and I wear my pants around my waiste, :)

PleaseWakeUp...You got a problem with stores being open on Sundays? I don't. For some of us it is our day to shop. If you truly have a problem with your stores being open, why do they need to be open 24 hours? They can hardly keep up with demands of their 10-for-10 specials and what not..no need for this. I am not one of these religious people who believes they need one day to rest, unless you're going to pay us to take the day off.

My apologies Seadog. I must have used a different dictionary growing up than you did.

Also, upon an (albeit quick) search online, the only two definitions I found were:

1. Transfer or delegate (power) to a lower level, esp. from central government to local or regional administration. 2. (of duties or responsibility) Pass to (a body or person at a lower level).

But that does not change the fact that word "Evolve" does not mean something is improving, it is merely changing. So yes, in fact, American Society is evolving, and will continue to do so.

Saying we've gone backwards, is all on your point of view or on specific issues. Ask a interracial married couple today if they've think we are moving backwards. Heck, in 1963 Italians and Swedes were barely marrying let alone blacks and whites. Women now have rights to birth control and other means of family planning. I agree that family life isn't the same, people way to quick to get divorced, children lack manners and respect, which is an issue. Different and Changing doesn't always mean worse.

But on the guns in schools. 99.9% students could bring guns to school and no problems would occur, but its that .1% that you can't risk. School shootings have been happening for decades now. Much more frequent and bloody today, but they aren't entirely new. In 1974 A student in Olean NY shot and killed 3 people and wounded 11 others.

All look at the fun images of kids behaving better in past decades and sharing apple pies and bringing their puppies to the vet....

Problem is...its not true. Here's the statistics of violent crimes commited by teens over the past decades. Notice that gun crimes are about exactly same 40 years ago as in the 2000's, and non-gun violence in the 14 to 17 age group is actually a little less.

Oh, I forgot, vaccinations are now preventing our children from horrible diseases, yep times are changing..

Oh, here's some statistics [as compared to anecdotes, lol]:

This shows overall violent crimes. Notice the similarity between recent times and the early 1960's:
