Close Call For Cardinals

ORCHARD PARK — Someday, when Randolph football coach Pat Slater and his counterpart at Maple Grove, Curt Fischer, decide to retire, they might want to consider collaborating on a book. A working title might be, ‘‘Just Another Randolph-Maple Grove Game.’’ Another compelling chapter was added to the rivalry Friday night, and, at the rate they’re going, the prospective tome figures to be a bestseller. The Cardinals, behind a 127-yard, two-touchdown effort by senior running back Matt Hettenbaugh and a whopping edge in time of possession, held off the defending state champions, 21-20, in the Section 6 Class D championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The victory vaults Randolph (9-1) into the Far West Regional at 5 p.m., next Friday against the Avon-Dundee winner at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester. Maple Grove, which defeated the Cardinals, 7-6, in the season opener two months ago, ends its season 8-2. ‘‘It’s nice to have a one-point victory for a change,’’ a beaming Slater said.
