Apple Fall Event?
September 22, 2011 - Dave Hecei
Although it has not yet been officially announced by Apple, there are enough rumors from many sources that hint at an upcoming Apple event on or about October 4th. This time of the year is when Apple likes to introduce new iPod models. Since Apple has not introduced a new iPhone this year, it is likely that this event will be dedicated to a new iPhone, or iPhones. There is also a good possibility that iPods might also be part of this event.
A new iPhone is past due. All other iPhones have been released in the middle of the year, specifically in July. This year, July came and went with little to no news about a new iPhone. Apple has been busily working on the new version of their mobile operating system, iOS 5, which is supposed to be ready in the Fall. Well Fall is coming so it was pretty obvious that Apple has been waiting for iOS 5 to be finished before they would release a new iPhone. On the iPod front, anything is possible. I don't have any of the numbers in front of me, but the iPod market might be waning. The iPod Touch is a very hot seller, while the Shuffles, Nanos, and Classics are starting to die off. There has been very little chatter on the Internet about any new type of iPod device coming. The end of the simple music player might be coming sometime soon. The Shuffle and Nano are probably good for now, but the Classic - the only model with a spinning hard drive inside - is long for this world. The Touch will live on as an alternative to an iPhone. It's the device for those who want an iPhone but don't need the 'phone'. It is the perfect gaming system or PDA type device.
Hopefully Apple will let us all know what is going on soon. This fall event, if and when it happens, will also likely be the first event headed by the new CEO, Tim Cook.
