Up in the Airport
June 15, 2011 - Dave Hecei
It looks like Apple might be releasing some new wireless products any day now. Apple makes two WiFi routers, the Airport Extreme and Airport Express. Both have been around for a while and could even get a new look (the white plastic days are over). They might even get a few new features.
Along with the Airport Extreme and Express, they also have the combo NAS drive/WiFi router called Time Capsule. It too looks like it will be refreshed. The interesting thing about the Time Capsule are the rumors that it Apple may use it somehow in conjunction with their new iCloud service.
Since the Time Capsule device has a large hard drive, which is used for network storage and Time Machine backup data, it could theoretically be used as a local storage device for media files, data, and Apps to be synced with iCloud. Those having a Time Capsule would then be able to sync much more efficiently than a direct connection to the iCloud servers.
Essentially, updates could come down from iCloud at any time, day or night, and be waiting on your Time Capsule for your iCloud devices. Having the data locally would transfer many times faster, since it is local to you and not out in the cloud where you are limited to the speed of your Internet connection.
If this rumor is true, Apple is truly starting to embrace the idea of 'cloud services'. The combination of iOS 5, OS X Lion, iCloud, and now possibly Time Capsule, would make a very strong team and could put Apple way ahead in cloud-based computing.
