24 Days of Gadgets – Day 7

December 8, 2009 - Dave Hecei
Gaming is big business. If you don’t think so just search online for sales figures for the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It was only recently released and has sold more copies and has made more money than even the biggest blockbuster movie yet made. For gaming consoles there are the big three: Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. Out of these three Sony has the most to offer.

The Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 are definitely in the same league. They are next generation gaming systems with HD video output. The Nintendo Wii is possibly more popular, but it cannot hold up to the shear power of the other two boxes.

The PS3 has some advantages over the other systems. The biggest being the optical drive Sony puts in the PS3 is Blu-Ray. This one feature has driven PS3 sales over the last year, it wasn’t because of the huge assortment of high-quality games. Not only is it a gaming system but one of the better Blu-Ray players you can buy.

Sony recently updated the PS3 this last fall releasing a newer slim design, along with a nicer slimmer price of $299. The new PS3 Slim comes with a 120 GB hard drive for storage, built-in Ethernet and WiFi wireless networking, two USB ports, and a Profile 2.0 Blu-Ray player with BD Live capabilities.

When the original PS3 was released at the end of 2006, games were a bit scarce. Thankfully that has changed and there are some amazing PS3 titles, some with stunning graphics, especially if you can hook up to a big HDTV.

The PS3 has even become more of a media center. The PS3 has the ability to play music and videos through the USB connection, external drive or USB memory stick, or saved on the internal hard drive. Just recently Netflix has come out with a free software disc for the PS3 giving it access to their streaming service.

Another advantage Sony has over the Xbox360 is free online multiplayer gaming. Xbox360 owners have to pay a monthly fee for network game play. The Xbox360 needs an optional WiFi adapter if you want to connect to a wireless network.

For the gamer who wants to play online against, or with, their friends, and also want all the media extras, the Sony Playstation 3 is a great choice. At $299, the slim is now more affordable.
