Quick Thoughts From Memorial Day Weekend

May 27, 2008 - John Whittaker

No one will ever confuse me with the most rabid racing fans out there, but I managed to catch most of the Indy 500 and Coca Cola 600 on Sunday. Give credit to Dale Earnhardt Jr. for managing to eke out a fifth place finish even though he blew a tire and hit a wall. And, the News Gal's favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, finished fourth even though he was a lap down at one point.

The funny part for me is Indy. I'm not a big open wheel fan, but every year, I watch at least part of the Indy 500. I have no idea who Scott Dixon is, but congrats to Dixon for winning the 500 and taking the milk bath.

I would be remiss if I didn't, on this day after Memorial Day, thank all of our veterans and servicemen and servicewomen who serve our country now. My father served during the Vietnam War and my brother, Matt, is over in Iraq now. For a long time, Memorial Day meant an early morning so the entire family could watch my sister, Beckie, who plays a mean clarinet, march in the Memorial Day parade. Then, we'd come home for a cook-out followed by Matt and I settling upstairs, usually to watch the Syracuse lacrosse team playing in the NCAA championship (which is always played on Memorial Day) or a Yankees game, followed by a little one-on-one basketball. Let the record show I was undefeated in those Memorial Day hoops games!

In all seriousness, though, Matt, if you're reading, keep safe - the News Gal and I love and miss you! Can't wait until you get home!

Speaking of Memorial Day traditions - and I'll get you started on what will be the first of hundreds of Syracuse sports-related posts -- way to go 'Cuse men's lacross team for winning the national title against Johns Hopkins on Monday. I didn't get to watch the game, though I will hope to catch it on Time Warner Sports, digital channel 1012, sometime this week. After not making the NCAA tournament -- seems to be a damn epidemic with our sports teams the last couple of years -- last year, the Orange restored some athletic pride with the team's 10th national lacrosse championship. Trust me, you'll hate this space during college basketball season!

A question to CBS -- with new episodes of this year's sitcoms over, why do you go back to a Season 2 episode of How I Met Your Mother? If you're going to show something not from the just-concluded Season 3, wouldn't it be Season 1, when Ted (the main character) wasn't a neuter? And, why show the first episode from Season 2, which is the complete opposite of the entire story arch of Season 3? Did the monkey fall asleep at the wheel? Did you decide you needed to show the episode again to get George Clinton on TV again? Someone needs to answer these questions for me!

This blog post finished while listening to Panama, by Van Halen - kind of fitting!
