25 Days of Gadgets - Day 18
December 18, 2008 - Dave Hecei
Contrary to popular belief, there are lots of games available for the Mac just nowhere near the amount or variety compared to the Windows platform. Most games, except for a notable few, are made for the PC first and if it becomes a hit it will get ‘ported’ to the Mac. (The latest batch of Electronic Arts (EA) games had the PC and Mac versions released at the same time.) One game that stands out with fun for all ages is Lego Star Wars II.
This is a sequel to the original Lego Star Wars (LSW), which was based on films I, II, and III. LSW II is based on the original Star Wars trilogy, episodes IV, V, and VI. This new game will appeal to kids, and unlike the original LSW, it will also appeal to older gamers, even to those Star Wars fans who saw the original movies in the theater.
For those who haven’t seen any of the Lego games, LSW II is a third-person 3D style game that plays in the Star Wars universe where the characters, ships, and props look like little Lego figurines and bricks. The game follows along the storyline of the movies, throwing in pleanty of humor along the way.
You can play the game as your favorite character from the movie - Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Ben Kenobi, Yoda, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader. You can even create a custom character, which can be made up from parts of other characters or with some new pieces.
A nice surprise is that LSW II for the Mac doesn’t require a ‘super’ Mac to run. You’ll need a Mac with: OS X v10.4 or later, 1.6GHz PowerPC or Intel processor, 512MB RAM, a video card with 64MB VRAM, 3GB free hard-disk space, Mouse and keyboard, and a DVD drive to load the game. LSW II will even work on a Mac mini or MacBook, which has Intel integrated video systems. To enhance game play, I would recommend a gamepad, something like the Logitech Dual Action Gamepad ($19.99).
LSW II is fun for all ages and is rated ‘E’ for everyone. The game contains minor cartoon style violence. The game lists for $39.99 and can be found at the Apple Store or other Apple retailers.
