25 Days of Gadgets - Day 8
December 9, 2008 - Dave Hecei
To keep going with the Podcasting theme, see Day 7, there is another way to record your voice into your Mac. If you have ever watched an NFL football game or any televised outdoor event, like a major parade, you may have seen the hosts wearing a headset with microphone. These also make an excellent microphone for Podcasting.
There are quite a few benefits using this type of setup. One is that they isolate the sound output so you can better hear what is happening, especially important in a noisy environment. Another benefit is that the microphone can be properly positioned close to your mouth allowing you to record just your voice and not your surroundings. Another important benefit is that the microphone stays in the same place even if you move or turn your head. Professional announcers and disc jockeys learn early in there careers that they can’t just turn to talk to someone next to them because their voice will trail off.
Planetronics is a maker of audio gear. They are well known for their telephony products and wireless cellular headsets. They also make some great headset microphones for computers and game systems. For the computer use, check out the Audio 650 USB.
The Audio 650 USB is great as a recording device for budding, or even professional, Podcasters. Another great use for a headset microphone is with voice or video chatting. We’re talking about programs like iChat, Google Talk, or Ebay’s Skype. The headphones allow you to hear everything clearly while not interfering with the sound going to the microphone. Headphones also help keep conversations with others more private.
Planetronics Audio 650 USB is a great choice for Podcasting, chatting, or gaming. The Audio 650 USB is priced around $40.
