A Big Year
January 7, 2014 - Dave Hecei
With 2013 a thing of the past, it’s now time to look to the year 2014. In the tech world, 2013 seemed to be the year of minis. The ‘tablet’ definitely went mini with the Kindle, Google Nexus, and new Retina iPad mini. Even the Mac Pro went mini. This year, 2014, looks to be the year of ‘big’.
When I say big I’m talking about new 4k and Ultra-HD televisions. These are going to be the ‘big’ thing at this year’s International CES event, which starts January 8. Along with UHDTVs there will be plenty of new humungous Android and Windows 8 tablets. Lenovo has a 27-inch model and Dell has an 18-inch XPS running Windows 8 – cool, but not what I would call mobile.
There are plenty of new rumors starting up again about Apple possibly making a bigger iPad. The iPad Air has a 9.7-inch high-resolution display and weighs only 1 pound. This makes it very mobile, but for those who are looking to maybe replace their laptop with the very capable iPad, a bit more screen real estate makes more sense.
The next size up in an iPad would be anything from 11 to 13-inches. There is really no reason Apple would have to change the physical pixel count, they would just end up with a less dense panel, which since it was a bigger screen it doesn’t have to be 400 ppi.
Newly announced is a bigger tablet from Samsung, who is turning out to be Apple’s chief competitor. This new Galaxy TabPro has a 12.2-inch display. There is also a Galaxy NotePro that included a Samsung S Pen. These new Samsung tablets come in different variants with WiFi, 3G, and LTE connectivity options. This announcement corresponds with this years International CES event, which runs from January 7-10, 2014. Pricing and availability was unavailable.
