Free iPhones

September 11, 2013 - Dave Hecei
iphone_5s_5cWell, the day has come and gone and Apple has finally introduced the next generation iPhones. Yes, that is a plural. There are two new iPhone models to be released next week. The iPhone 5C, one of Apple’s worst kept secrets, and the iPhone 5S. And yes, it is available in gold.

While new iPhones are always exciting, I think the best news of the day was glossed over a bit. Since I am not eligible for a new iPhone for another year, the new phones haven’t really excited me much. For those who have finished their contract (or are about to), the new iPhones are very shiny and colorful. They are also faster and with the 5S have some nice new features. This consists of faster processors, a better camera, and a new fingerprint scanner. This scanner should allow one to unlock the phone plus it looks like Apple will be using it for authentication at the Apple Store and iTunes Store. Other vendors may be included at a later time.

The iPhone 5S is prices the same as the model it replaces. It is available with 16, 32, 64 GB of storage for $199, $299, and $399. The iPhone 5C is available with a new polycarbonate case in Blue, White, Pink, Yellow, or Green. It is available with 16GB or 32GB of storage for $99 and $199. The 5C does not have the fingerprint scanner.

What I think is the bigger news story is the new free iPhone. In the past few years, Apple has the new iPhone at the same price and drops the previous model down in price. With the new 5C in the iPhone lineup, this really doesn’t work anymore. The iPhone 5 is now gone. The 5C is the $99 phone and the 4S is now free with a 2-year contract.

Whether or not a 5C is better than a 4S is hard to say. The 5C is a larger display, but that is the biggest difference. The speed between the two is close enough that it’s not noticeable. No matter which one you choose, the final cost is not really the iPhone itself, but the two years at about $100 a month for phone/data/texting service. So the final cost is over $2000 for a two-year contract. So the $100 iPhone or free iPhone in reality is just a drop in the bucket.

New iPhones are always fun to see and play with, or even own. The other big news is that iOS 7 will be available as a free upgrade starting on September 18. This is the next generation of Apple’s mobile operating system and the biggest change in iOS since the addition of the App Store. The new iOS 7 will work on iPhone 4 or better, iPad 2 or better, iPad mini, and 5th generation iPod Touch.
