A Series of Unfortuante Events

July 8, 2013 - Liz Skoczylas
My husband and I rarely agree on what movie to watch.

He likes action-y type movies. I like RomComs. Occasionally we agree on a classic. But, usually, one of us settles on a movie choice.

Last Monday, Nick and I sat down to watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory together, a movie we actually both agreed to watch, to end our day. Right as Charlie found the golden ticket and was rushing home to tell his family, our power flickered and the fire department was toned out for a transformer explosion and fire at Rand Machine. Nick took off in his truck to the scene. The dog and I took a walk to see the fire. And our movie was put on hold.

After a busy week, Saturday night Nick and I decided to pick up where we left off on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, to finish the movie. We were relaxing. Poor Augustus Gloop had just been sucked up to the fudge room, the rest of the kids were heading through the tunnel... And the tones went off again. This time, for a terrible motorcycle accident, just down the street from our home.

When Nick got home after midnight from the accident, I joked that we better have the fire department on standby if we tried to watch the movie again.

Yesterday, we were eating dinner and decided to finish the movie once we were done. Again, I joked that there would probably be a structure fire this time. As we sat down to finish the movie, I even put on Facebook that we were trying to finish our movie, and that the fire department should just be on standby.

In a terrible coincidence, as soon as Charlie and Grandpa Joe were testing the Fizzy Lifting Drinks, the tones went off again. And, it was for the structure fire in Kennedy.

We still haven't finished the movie. But, at this point, I'm thinking we should give it up and destroy the DVD. Every time we have tried to watch it in the last week, something awful has happened. I think it is just a very bad luck DVD. Logic says that if we try to finish the movie, nothing will happen. But, our experience this week has not been a good one. So, with these very bad coincidences, I think we will go back to disagreeing over which movies to watch...
