Jamestown is Still Standing

March 21, 2013 - Liz Skoczylas
It has taken me a while to recover enough to write a blog, but last weekend marked another wedding milestone -- my bridal shower AND bachelorette party!

A week ago, I got to see my MOH, Emily, for the first time since last summer! Emily is my Jersey girl, and she was one of my roommates in college. And, she stayed with Nick and I from Thursday through Sunday morning, when she had to get on a plane and head for San Fran for work.

The great thing about Emily is, she is my "Miss Martha," as in Stewart, minus the legal issues. In college, she studied ceramics. She is crazy creative, but she also could make, like, gourmet meals using a hotplate and a microwave. And, well, I don't know how much Martha S. drinks, but Emily and I know how to have a good time when we're together.

Last Friday, when I got home from work, she immediately poured us drinks, and then we got to work making homemade spinach and artichoke dip (if anyone wants the recipe, seriously, let me know! It's amazing!!) and all kinds of other goodies as appetizers for my bachelorette the next night. Then, we took a break from drinking to go get manicures and pedicures, and promptly went back to drinking following our pampering.

Don't judge, blog readers. It was my bridal shower/bachelorette weekend. I'm marrying a firefighter who likes saving the world, so we had DDs all weekend AND I rarely everrrrrrr drink like this. Disclaimer: I do not condone excessive drinking.

Saturday was the big day. Since it's over, I will tell you my bridal shower was at Diamond Cafe in Lakewood. If you have never eaten there, I recommend doing so immediately after you read this. Or, wait til breakfast tomorrow, cuz the breakfasts are amazing as well.

Along with Emily, my brother's fiance and my bridesmaid, Mary and my other bridesmaid, Ally, did an amazing job at putting things together. Because she is Miss Martha, Emily made the favors, along with a ton of help from Mary. Emily made homemade bath fizzies and Mary made homemade lotion. I'm still working on the recipes for these, but I will tell you, the bath fizzy smelled AMAZING in the tub the other night. And, the lotion seriously has my hands feeling like butter. In other words, my bridesmaids are amazing.

They also played some great shower games. And, when it came time to open gifts -- which is the one thing I was not looking forward to! -- it actually wasn't too painful. Nick and I received a lot of amazing items. It was actually overwhelming how generous our families and friends were to us when shopping for gifts!

Nick came down to the shower after he got out of work, right when things were wrapping up. He helped load up all of our gifts :)

Then... It was bachelorette time.

Because this is a family newspaper -- and my parents and members of my church read it!! -- I won't go into much detail about the bachelorette. It began with shenanigans at my house, which also included the appetizers Emily and I made the day before. And, we went out to dinner at Forte. A big thank you goes out to former P-J employee Nick Dean, who made sure we had a fantastic time at Forte. He honestly went above and beyond, in my opinion, to be sure we were taken care of while in the restaurant.

After dinner... There were more shenanigans. I won't say where I was Saturday night, but if you were out and saw a bachelorette... I apologize, because it was probably me, and I was probably being quite boisterous. But, other people were out celebrating St. Patty's Day, so perhaps we blended right in!

Surprisingly, Sunday, I was feeling pretty ok. I was even well enough to make a trip to Erie with Nick to spend some of our gift cards. I mean, after four years of college, I have experienced much worse mornings. So, I guess St. Patrick himself was smiling on me over the weekend.

All in all, the weekend far exceeded any expectations I might have had. It is now 51 days until our wedding, and we are working out little details. Invitations have been sent out, and my parents are already receiving RSVPs. Last I checked with Matka, there had only been one no returned so far.

Aside from the little things, Nick still has his bachelor party to live through. And, I can only hope he will feel as well as I did the next day!
