Air in my Pro
March 30, 2012 - Dave Hecei
The rumor of new MacBook Air models has been active for a while now. The more rabid one is that Apple is working on a 15-inch version of the Air. There have also been quite a few rumors that Apple might even be thinking of combining the Air and the Pro together creating a new line.
This is actually kind of believable. Apple has been selling Airs faster than anything but the iOS line. If Apple could take the best of both worlds, the Pro’s speed and ports, along with the Air’s super fast SSD and ultra light design the combination would be formidable. The idea of an optical drive is already passé as far as Apple is concerned, so might as well drop it from all laptops.
It may not happen in the next round of MacBook updates. But if Apple is about to release a 15-inch Air, it will be the beginning of the end for the traditional MacBook Pro line. Maybe they’ll call it something different, or maybe they will keep the ‘Pro’ label even on the models without optical drives.
No matter which way they go, Apple will still have the mid and high-end laptop market. Since they won’t make a laptop that sells for less than $999.99 (or let’s just say a grand), Apple really doesn’t even want to venture into the low-end laptop market. You really can’t blame them after all, with several of the top PC makers creating MacBook Air clones. And yes, many of these clones are right around $999.99.
