GERRY — Two people, a man and a woman, were found dead after fire broke out at their town of Gerry home Sunday morning.

The occupants were later identified as Jeffrey and Judith Church, both 66 years old, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release.

Volunteer companies were alerted just before 6 a.m. Sunday to a possible structure fire at 4932 Herrick Road. The property is located between Elwell and Gerry Ellington roads.

Upon nearing the scene, a fire official confirmed the blaze, which eventually drew members from Gerry, Ellery Center, Falconer, Kennedy, Fluvanna, Sinclairville, Ellington and Stockton to the scene. Chautauqua County EMS and deputies with the Sheriff’s Office also responded.

A county coroner was later summoned to the scene after the victims were found inside the home by first responders.

The rear of the residence was heavily damaged by the blaze; two vehicles parked outside were completely destroyed while a firefighter could be seen using a hose line to douse water on one of the vehicles.

Members of the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team responded to the scene to conduct an “origin and cause fire investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its news release. The cause was not released by press time, and the investigation is ongoing.
