Truck-Lite: Day-To-Day Operations To Stay Here

FALCONER — Truck-Lite Co., the longtime manufacturer of heavy-duty and off road lighting located in Falconer, said it is committed to remaining in the village as a new headquarters is built in Michigan.

The comments are the first released by the company since it was reported late last week that $4 million would be invested in the new Southfield, Mich., location. The move will include the creation of 95 jobs through an agreement with the Michigan Economic Development Corp. in the form of a $850,000 performance-based grant. The move is further bolstered by the company’s wish to be in close proximity to its supply chains and qualified workers.

In a statement to The Post-Journal on Wednesday, Truck-Lite officials said “critical functions that support the day-to-day oversight” of the Falconer location and plants in Pennsylvania will remain in Falconer. Meanwhile, positions tied to “global growth and strategic initiatives” will be based at the soon-to-be built Southfield headquarters.

Locally, Truck-Lite has called its 310 E. Elmwood Ave. facility home for several decades. The company employs about 3,000 total workers at all of its facilities.

“While new jobs will be created in Southfield and some associates will relocate to best support Truck-Lite’s global business strategy, the existing Falconer facility will continue to host Truck-Lite’s North American operations,” the company said. “Creating a worldwide headquarters is truly an exciting evolution in Truck-Lite’s ongoing story of innovation and leading the transportation safety industry.”

Truck-Lite did not state how many local employees were likely to move to Michigan. However, a spokeswoman said reports this week that dozens of corporate jobs would be moved to Michigan while others would be shifted to Pittsburgh were not accurate.

“I do not know where those figures came from,” the spokeswoman said.

Truck-Lite was founded by George D. Baldwin in 1955 in rented quarters in Jamestown. Ground was broken in 1966 at the Elmwood Avenue location in Falconer at an estimated cost of $800,000.

The company also consists of Truck-Lite Road Ready; DAVCO Technology in Saline, Mich.; RIGID Industries in Gilbert, Ariz.; Truck-Lite Mexico; and Truck-Lite Europe.
