Former WCA Announces Name Change To UPMC Chautauqua

Jamestown’s longtime hospital, which finalized an integration with the Pittsburgh-based UPMC health organization in December 2016, has altered its name.

Officials announced this week the “refinement” of the hospital’s name to UPMC Chautauqua, dropping WCA from the brand. The change officially took effect July 1.

“Our new name reinforces and reflects our integrated and aligned approach with UPMC and projects the brand, strength, and resources of UPMC while preserving the communities that we are privileged to serve in Chautauqua,” said Betsy T. Wright, UPMC Chautauqua president, in a statement to The Post-Journal. “The evolution of our hospital name is important because it further underscores the combined strength of our system, offering patients and their families a full continuum of high-quality care combined with the patient experience.

“In addition to enhancing health care quality, broad system-wide name awareness enables the system to attract the best doctors, clinicians, and staff.”

Wright said all signage at the 207 Foote Ave. hospital will be changed to reflect the new name by the end of the year.

The facility was chartered in 1885 as the Women’s Christian Association as a boarding house for young working women and a one-room hospital for its residents. The first nurses graduated from the WCA School of Nursing in 1890.

Officials from WCA and UPMC began working on the integration — the first to occur in New York state — a year before it was finalized. Officials signed an affiliation to integrate agreement in December 2015. At the time, Wright noted that UPMC had committed millions of dollars over the next 10 years for enhancements at the hospital.

In April of this year, hospital officials celebrated after the last steel beam was placed atop the future site of the $20 million Women’s and Maternity Care Center and Adolescent and Adult Mental Health Inpatient Units.

Starting at $2.99/week.
