JPS To Name Apthorpe As New Superintendent

The Post-Journal has confirmed that Bret Apthorpe, Ed. D., will be taking over as the superintendent of Jamestown Public Schools.

The Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education will be voting on the appointment during a special meeting today at 5:30 p.m. inside Washington Middle School.

Apthorpe, a SUNY Fredonia graduate and Mayville native, is currently employed as the superintendent of the Frontier Central School District. He was hired in 2014 and signed a three-year contract and later a one-year extension in 2015. According to The Buffalo News, the Frontier Central School District Board of Education had just approved a 2 percent raise for Apthorpe during a June 20 meeting. His salary for the upcoming school year, which begins Saturday, was to be $171,666.

Apthorpe is approaching 30 years in the education field. Before joining the Frontier Central School District, he was the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at the Fairport Central School District. Prior to that, Apthorpe was a director of technology for Fairport and director of instructional technology for Monroe 1BOCES. He has also been a senior high school assistant principal for Churchville-Chili Central School District and was a 7-12 social studies teacher for 12 years at Southwestern Central School District and Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District.

Apthorpe, who was born and raised in Mayville, attended the University at Buffalo earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and education. He attended SUNY Fredonia graduating with a Master of Science degree in elementary reading. Apthorpe furthered his studies at SUNY Brockport acquiring a certificate of advanced study in educational administration. Finally, Apthorpe holds a Doctorate of Education degree in educational leadership from the University of Rochester.

The new superintendent is no stranger to social media. He can be followed on Twitter by searching for his handle @FrontierSupt or followed on Blogspot by searching Apthorpe Outdoors, where he documents his fishing excursions.

Jamestown Public Schools officials, when reached for comment Thursday afternoon, said the district would be unable to comment on the hire until after the board had officially voted on the candidate. Calls made to Frontier Central School District board of education members went unreturned.

Apthorpe will be taking over for interim-superintendent Sylvia Root, who replaced Tim Mains following his departure to the Pine Bush Central School District in February.

Starting at $2.99/week.
