Falconer Fire Destroys Main Street Buildings

Several fire departments are on scene battling a structure spanning half a block on Main Street in Falconer.

Update: Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan visited the fire scene and said state representatives Sen. Cathy Young and Assemblyman Andy Goodell have been made aware of the situation. Horrigan said the county will assist in any way possible.

Falconer Mayor James Rensel said 15 residents have been displaced and several businesses impacted. No injuries have been reported.

“This is absolutely devastating for Falconer,” Rensel said. “But we will come together and do what we have to to make sure everyone is fine.”

One such resident displaced by the fire is Jessica Milliman, who lives at 42 Main St. Milliman said she was at work when told of the fire. She rushed to the scene, worried about her dog.

Milliman said a neighbor broke into her apartment and rescued her dog before the nearby fire spread too far into her complex. She said it’s stressful not knowing what can be salvaged at this point.

“I have no idea what to expect,” Milliman told The Post-Journal. “You can see there’s a lot of damage, but until I get in there all I can do is sit here and wait.”

Among the fire departments on the scene are Falconer, Celoron, Gerry, Randolph, Fluvanna, Kennedy, Frewsburg and Jamestown.

Jamestown BPU officials report pumps at the Buffalo Street reservoir will be turned higher because of the fire, resulting in discolored water for Falconer and the north side of Jamestown. BPU Water customers system-wide should be sure their water appears clear before doing laundry. The water is safe but discolored. BPU Water customers in the Village of Falconer may lose water for a period of time this morning as firefighters work to extinguish the fire. Once water is restored from the Buffalo Street water station, water will be safe but may appear discolored in Falconer, the north side of Jamestown and possibly system wide.

In addition, due to the fire, our BPU electric employees have turned off power on W. Main Streeet from Work to East Second streets, Tiffany Avenue, Homestead Avenue, W. Falconer and Rich streets.

Route 394 in Falconer from Phetteplace Street to Work Street will be closed most of the day.
