Some Samples Find High Lead Content In FCS
FALCONER — Falconer Central Schools reported few high lead-laden water samples in their recently released testing results.
At a board meeting Tuesday, Business Manager Brent Agett said the results had been received and letters would be sent to parents before the holiday break. There were a few reported instances of high lead counts in the Middle/High school and Fenner Elementary School, however, Temple Elementary School was found to be without high lead results.
The state standard for lead content is 15 parts per billion (ppb).
At Fenner Elementary School, there were two reported samples found to have high lead, including a porcelain water fountain in art room 101 with a result of 36.6 ppb, and a hand-wash faucet in girls bathroom room 132 with a result of 45.5 ppb.
The Middle/High school reported seven instances of high lead results, including three preparation faucets and four laboratory faucets. In room 351, one preparation faucet had a result of 23.8 ppb while another preparation faucet had a result of 16 ppb. In the concession stand, a preparation faucet measured 15.1 ppb. In room 110 east lab sink laboratory faucet had a measurement of 15.9 ppb. A laboratory faucet in room 208 in the west lab sink had a measurement of 27 ppb. Two laboratory faucets in room 308 had high measurements: the west lab sink had a results of 18.6 while the east lab sink had a measurement of 16.1.
Agett said signs will be hung over sinks with high measurements which state the water is not for drinking. After necessary changes are made to fixtures, the tests will be run again on those fixtures to make sure they are acceptable. He said it took about two-and-a-half months to get the results back from the first testing, so it might take some time for the re-testing results as well.
“Those faucets have been shut off, and we will put the signage up in the bathrooms, so that could be operable once we do put that signage up,” Agett said, adding they might be put up within the next week. “Once we get those results back (from the second testing) we have to report those again.”
He said the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services has been very helpful throughout the process.
Superintendent Steve Penhollow said the results are available online for those who are interested, as well as the letters that will be sent home to parents. The results will be displayed under the quick links heading on the school website at falconerschools.org under “lead testing.”
In other news, the board made a motion to cancel the Tuesday, Jan. 3, board meeting due to the closeness in proximity to the most recent meeting. The next scheduled board meeting is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
