A grassroots organization is looking for donations to help victims of domestic violence “begin again.”
Emily McVay, Begin Again Kits coordinator, recently started an initiative to help women get back on their feet after leaving a domestic violence situation. McVay is asking community members for help in supporting domestic violence survivors in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. According to McVay, the kits will include the basic necessities that aren’t covered by food stamps or other assistance programs.
In Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, she said there is a need for at least 10 kits a month. Five will go to Chautauqua County survivors while the other five will go to those in Cattaraugus County.
“We launched on International Womens’ Day,” McVay said. “Women when they go into homes and what not when escaping domestic violence, there are a lot of resources for them, but with research I’ve done, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of resources for them when they’re stepping out on their own.”
Needed items include new or used plastic bins and totes, plastic laundry baskets, pots and pans, dish drainers, measuring cups, cooking utensils, kids plastic plates and utensils; can openers, cutting boards and sets of four in plates, bowls, silverware, glasses and coffee mugs. The organization is looking for new containers of dish detergent; all-purpose cleaner; reusable dish rags and oven mitts.
There are currently multiple drop-off locations, such as Patient’s Pharmacy in Jamestown and Dunkirk; Land Pro in Falconer; Howard Hanna Professionals in Olean; and Key Bank on Foote Avenue in Jamestown and the location in Westfield.
McVay said the items are all donated, and will stay in the local area. She said she is currently looking for more drop-off locations across the area.
“Let’s tell these women we have their backs,” she said.
