Another downtown building’s roof has collapsed, which will lead to another demolition.

Vince DeJoy, city development director, said barricades have been placed around the former Betty Dixon Candy store, located at 101.5 W. Third St., because of a roof collapse in the back part of the building. He said an engineer inspected the building Thursday and found it to be structurally unsound.

“There is a good possibility a demo will have to happen sometime soon,” DeJoy said. “We have to make sure there is no asbestos. Once clear, perhaps further action will be taken.”

DeJoy said if there is no asbestos, the demolition process will be quicker and cheaper. He said the demolition process could be even quicker if the building is determined to be an eminent danger to the public, which would require an emergency demolition. He added the building is owned by the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation.
